Last weekend I had a mission to go get some feeder shrimps from an aquarium shop to serve as some sort of living filter cleaner for the newly christened water planter/pond filter for our garden. After that mission was completed, it was of course, time for breakfast.

I went around Klang town a bit and ended up at the food court right across the road from Sei Ngan Chai BKT and the “Hilton” wantan mee place looking for something to eat, and this is when I realised I should give this char kuih teow stall a try, mainly just by looking at how many trays of eggs they have right next to the wok.
I took a seat next to the stall and ordered a plate without any specific instructions. About 20 odd minutes later, the plate of char kuih teow arrived, and it looked pretty legit I must say. There’s chives, bean sprouts, cockles, prawns, egg, and properly fried kuih teow that’s ever so slightly charred on certain pieces, indicative of good wok-hei.

And yep, this is one char kuih teow worth eating if you’re tired of bak kut teh at Klang. The banner outside says “Jalan Batai” char kuih teow, which would suggest that perhaps it was from Seng Lee kopitiam which has since closed down after the revamp of the whole area. I did not ask the proprietor, but this version certainly tastes as good.
When it comes to bak kut teh, the best recommendation usually comes from those who stay or work very close to Klang, so when Yuki mentioned that we should try out Swee Xiang bak kut teh at Klang Utama, I knew that it was not going to be something special, and indeed it was.

Swee Xiang is located at the less glamorous part of Klang, quite a fair bit away from most residential areas. It is about a 10 minutes drive from Klang town itself, in the light industry area opposite the huge 99 Speedmart warehouse along Jalan Kapar.
It is a typical “kopitiam” type of set up, and being located within an industrial area, parking is plentiful, so that’s definitely a plus.

Unlike typical bak kut teh place, Swee Xiang actually offers quite a few differnet dishes. The hong bak here is definitely something that you shouldn’t miss, the soft pork tendon, tofu, and fatty pork knuckle were prepared perfectly with super thick sauce that left me yearn for more.
The bak kut teh is decent but not overly impressive, I’d recommend ordering minimal portion just for completeness and hydration sake.

Interestingly, curry chicken is also one of the more popular dishes here (sort of like Peng Heong paikut offering mutton curry). The version here comes with thick curry broth, soft potato, and juicy chunks of chicken that goes well with steamed rice.
In the interest of taking full advantage of a “cheat day”, we also ordered some intestine & chicken feet to complete the meal. It was quite glorious.
Unfortunately, our session was not 100% complete as the highly recommended pork stomach soup had ran out that day, so it looks like we’ll have to go back there again.

When it comes to pork noodle, there is a family that dominates PJ/Sunway/Subang area. I was told that the operators of the famous stalls at Kean Fatt SS3, Subang Jaya SS15, and Ah Or at Sunway Mentari are all related.
SS3’s version is basically my go-to pork noodle (due to location) when I have the patient to wait, but I thought, why not try them all out and see if they are really similar. Hence we got ourselves at Ah Or Pork Noodle last weekends.

Ah Or is located at Sunway Mentari, the place where it’s easy to spot and harder than hell to get to due to confusing traffic pattern. It also doesn’t help that the location stated on Google map is wrong (as 10/5/15). But with some luck, we got there anyhow.
The restaurant is as basic as you get, with one pork noodle stall, plenty of plastic tables & chairs, and nothing else.
how can you resist this?
The stall itself indeed does look like the one at SS3, with the rather unique label of “Penang Pork Noodle” in Chinese. Well, I’m from Penang and there’s really no such thing as Penang Pork Noodle…
The menu here is slightly wider than Kean Fatt, you get to choose between wet/dry, and a choice of yellow noodle, meehun, kuih teow, loshu fun, and even meesuah.

We went for our usual – soup version with kuih teow and an extra egg.
Well, it tasted about 90% similar to the one at SS3 which I’m familiar with, with the exception of intestine being much softer, but liver slightly more cooked. The soup is still has that sweet savory taste, and the half boiled egg perfectly done.
The wait time was some 20 minutes, actually not too bad for a Saturday. Would not mind to go again for sure.

Good Laksa Sawarak is a bit of a rare commodity here in Klang Valley, for the longest time, my go-to place remains the stall at Happy Garden in Bangsar, I’ve tried a few other places but usually ended up less than impressed.
Until we decided to give 7th Mile Restaurant at Kelana Jaya try.
7th Mile Kitchen, at Kelana Sentral Service Apartment
Situated at the ground floor of the less than glamorous Kelana Sentral Service Apartment (across from Paradigm Mall by LDP), 7th Mile Restaurant is more of a single stall kopitiam than a restaurant. There’s no air conditioning nor cute decoration, but they have good authentic Sarawakian dishes prepared by Sarawakian at more than reasonable prices.

The laksa sarawak turned out to be rather awesome, the broth was thick and flavorful without having to be overly spicy. There’s prawn, strips of fried egg and all the usual ingredients you find in a bowl of laksa sarawak, it was glorious. We really liked it.

The kolo meehere is pretty good as well, with thin and springy noodle topped with charsiu, minced pork, spring onion, and a hint of those delicious charsiu sauce. It’s a more subtle dish compared to the laksa, I liked it too.
Other than noodles (they also serve tomato mee which I’ve yet to try), they serve pretty mean cup of traditional coffee as well, including three layer tea and Sarawak teh-c peng.
Horng and I were both from the same “11200” postcode back in Penang, an area that is called Tanjung Bunga (literally cape of flower). So it was a bit of a wonder why it took us so long to step into the Tanjung Bunga nyonya restaurant at SS2 despite having driven by the shop lots on multiple occasions over the years.

As a rule of thumb, if a restaurant has been there for ages and do very little in terms of decoration or renovation, chances are the food is usually at least decent.
In that sense, Tanjung Bunga Penang Nyonya Cuisine is one such places, the interior is rather basic but clean, with air conditioning system that sort of works.

Tanjung Bungah restaurant offers pretty much all the essential Penang nyonya dishes. For the five of us, we ordered five different dishes for dinner. Serving time was actually pretty fast, with the first dish arriving some 10 minutes after ordering.
Curry fish head with garupa was rich, spicy, and true to Nyonya style, comes with a plenty of vegetable and even mint leaves. Fried asam prawn was prepared the way my mom would, which also reminds me of the version at Kah Soh – retaining the sweetness of tiger prawns while infusing the dish with just the right amount of dark soya sauce and asam.
Perut ikan, or pickled swim bladder curry, could be slightly richer and creamier, but a passable dish nonetheless.

Then there’s paku pakis, or the wild fern shoots, a vegetable dish to fill the vitamin C quota, and one with texture that I always love. The preparation method here is more “lemak” than spicy, which suits us just find as there was already curry on the table.
Our favorite dish turned out to be the inchi cabin, or the Nyonya fried chicken. The unique blend of spices and sauce used to marinate this version of fried chicken was just spot on, We wish we ordered more.
Dinner came to be about RM 15-20 per person, which is on par with other similar restaurants, would not hesitate to go back there again.
