KFC Chicken Chop – the best thing ever!

KFC is always one of my favorite places to be. I remember back in the days when I was a boy, my late dad would bring the family to KFC once a month or so as a treat. It was always a very anticipated event.

A little bit of memory quiz for those who listens to Light & Easy FM (aka old!), do you still remember that KFC was once a sit-down restaurant? Ahh.. the memories.

To this day, I must get my KFC fix at least a couple times a month over lunch. Thus it came as no surprise that I”m always interested when KFC introduces new product on the market.

And this time around I think KFC has hit the bulls eye. I believe the new KFC Chicken Chop is going to be a winner.

9 out of 10 times at KFC, I order the Original Recipe snack plate with drumstick and thigh. So what could be better than that?

The original recipe drumstick & thigh chicken ….. BONELESS! This is just sheer genius, which made me wonder why they haven’t taught thought of this before.

boness OR chicken thigh & drumstick, mushroom sauce, yums!

The KFC chicken chop also comes with sweet corn (again, without the corn stem!) and potato wedges on the sides. To top it off, there’s the mushroom sauce too, with chunks of button mushroom in it.

Best of all, this wholesome meal with a Mountain Dew is only priced at RM 9.90. That’s cheaper than some hawker stalls already if you factor in drinks, and you won’t get the clean environment and air conditioning at kopitiam that’s for sure.

The KFC chicken shop is served with fork & knife too, but nothing’s stopping you from eating without utensils so that you can have that finger lickin’ good experience!

OK, writing this has been tough on my stomach, I think I’m gonna have this for lunch today!

Freddy Western Food at Restaurant Millenium 86, Taman Paramount

When adopted by a different culture and people, food often gets adapted as well. Bit by bit, the authenticity gets assimilated to the local taste, and after decades, you get something that bears very little resemblance to its origin. This however, does not mean that the end product is necessarily inferior.

Two such cases on the opposite sides of the world are Chinese food in US, and western food here in Malaysia. You can’t find General Tso’s chicken (my fav!) in a traditional Chinese restaurant here, nor can you order chicken chop with Hailam sauce in Washington DC.

Which brings us to today’s topic, Freddy Western Food, comes with awesomesauce, literally.

We discovered this stall by chance one day when Kerol ordered chicken chop from this stall that looked surprisingly… clean. Her verdict was very positive, and if Kerol said it is good, it must be, she’s got one of the fussiest tongues among the gang.

pork chop, chicken chop, lamb chop
pork chop with hailam sauce, chicken chop with mushroom sauce,
pork chop with mushroom sauce, lamb chop with black pepper sauce

A couple nights ago we headed over to give this place an introduction to Suanie since she just got hit by a chicken chop phase (to go along with her Teow Chew porridge and pan mee phase concurrently)

I had the pork chop with hailam sauce (RM 9),  Haze ordered lamb chop with pepper sauce (RM 9.50), Horng had pork chop with mushroom sauce (RM 9), and Suanie, of course, ordered chicken chop with mushroom sauce (RM 8.50).

While the pork could be just a bit juicier (due to the cut, I think), the sauce was really, really good. Good enough to overcome the slight dryness of the meat. Suan was very happy with her chicken chop, as does Haze with her lamb chop that came with a bit of bone marrow too.

There’s another secret under the meat – mash potato with freshly fried bacon chips. The little touch really made the dish yummy max!

While there are other more famous Western Food stalls such as those in SS3 near Shell petrol station, this is the first one of this kind that I found worthy of a blog post. Give it a try, I think they serve pretty good spaghetti too!

KY eats – Local Delights at Wild Rice Restaurant, MV Boulevard Hotel

Earlier this month I was invited to the Wild Rice restaurant at Mid Valley Boulevard hotel for a food review session courtesy of foodstreet. I looked through the list of my MSN and found a dinner partner in Ringo to go there with me. (you know, a fehmes blogger to increase my street cred.)

Wild Rice Restaurant at Mid Valley Boulevard Hotel
wild rice restaurant, with indoor and outdoor seatings

The wild rice restaurant is situated on the 9th floor with nice indoor seatings as well as the open terrace with a beautiful pool view.

We were greeted by the friendly communication manager Mr. Huang, and shortly after that the dishes started coming in. The good chef prepared eight dishes for just the three of us for the night. Other than their weekend buffet, Wild Rice restaurant serves Malaysian food as well as Western dishes.

clay pot chicken rice, char kueh teow, Penang seafood hor fun

Our first dish of the night was none other than Char Kueh Teow. I usually have my reservations when it comes to this dish, but the chef (who has a very strong Penang tie) actually pulled this off rather well. The good size prawns, chives, bean sprouts, and egg combined to deliver a dish that tasted pretty good.

Similarly, the Penang Hor Fun was very nice as well. I like the way the egg is done with the yolk still half cooked while the white spread over the flat noodle. The hor fun comes with prawns, squid, dory fish fillet, and vegetables.

The chef also prepared two versions of clay pot chicken rice for us, the more usual recipe with salted fish, and a version with century egg. Although I love century eggs, I think the combination is a little weird though, this little experiment from the chef didn’t turn out very great (the dish is not on the menu). Then again, I always applaud chefs who are willing to experiment.

Hainanese chicken chop, avocado burger, pan fried salmon, oxtail soup

Then there’s the very crispy and juicy Hainanese chicken chop that I wish I have a bigger stomach to eat more. The chicken chop consists of 1/4 quarter chicken with thigh and drumstick, fresh button mushroom in brown sauce with some mixed vegetables, and of course, fries. (I wonder if they have fries in Hainan, but lets not digress)

The pan fried salmon was good as well, but I think the most interesting dish for the day goes to the avocado burger. This vegetarian dish has beet root, cheese, butter, and a generous serving of sliced avocado. If you had California Roll, you know how avocado tastes like. The combination of avocado relish, and cheese in the bun was actually delicious.

    the good chef and Ringo

Ringo’s favorite dish, if my memory serves me correct, was the Malaysian oxtail soup. It wasn’t too spicy nor tasted too strongly. The soup was just nice with the meat tender and the carrots soft, serving it in a clay pot does help by keeping the temperature.

The best thing about Wild Rice restaurant is the fact that it is open 24 hrs a day. To me this spells the end of mamak after midnight show especially if I’m at Mid Valley.

As for price, I think they are pretty reasonable for a hotel. Soup is RM15; the burger and other local dishes are around RM 18 to RM 22. Expect to pay slightly more for western dishes, but the portions are pretty big. The good news is that the prices are nett, no extra 10% or 5%. I like that.

KY eats – 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak at Seksyen 17, PJ

I was informed of 6 to 10 grill & nasi lemak by one of my housemates who read it on the Chinese daily Sin Chew Jit Poh. Since the restaurant is conviniently located at Petaling Jaya and we haven’t had “western food” for a while, I figured, why not? Surely Sin Chew didn’t review this place just because they want to save on transportation claims by the reporter.

    typical decent kopitiam set up

6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak has quite a selection of western food items on the menu, and of course, the nasi lemak. I ordered their claim of fame, the red wine lamb special, and the other noobs had grilled salmon and chicken chop. We didn’t bother to try the nasi lemak, I’ve read it was nothing special anyway.

6 to 10 grill and nasi lemak at Seksyen 17, Petaling Jaya
mouth watering western food, look at the lamb, yum

The red wine lamb certainly took quite a while for them to serve, but when it came, it was a generous portion with 4 pieces of decent size lamb shoulder marinated to perfection. On it’s own they tasted pretty good, but to get the best taste, you will have to add the mint sauce that came with it. The tender texture with the hint of red wine, mixed with the lamb’s original taste and the extra dimension the mint sauce brought in, YUM!

I stole a taste of the grilled salmon, it was really good. The sauce was rich but not too overpowering, and the filet wasn’t overly grilled either. The chicken chop with black pepper sauce was pretty decent as well. But as chicken chop goes, there isn’t alot of things you can do to make it better.

the mint sauce does the trick, only bones left

The garnish and sides that came with the dishes weren’t exactly spectacular, only the usual “salad”, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, and fries. Next time I’m there, I’m gonna order the mixed grill, the pictures hanging on the wall looks great, with at least 3-4 types of meat and shrimps.. *drools*
