A couple weeks after one of our Sunday KL car free cycling session, Jean took the initiative to arrange for lunch and brought us to Bukit Damansara for something pretty interesting – a proper big bungalow that serves hawker dishes from Johor.

This place is none other than Kecur. As I found out later, kecur is a Malay word that meant the feeling of saliva forming when you’re attracted to food, so, an aptly named place for sure.

The set up as as what you’d expect, a typical big bungalow, with tables and chairs of different shapes and sizes sprawled within the living room and even at the garden. I imagined seating outside must be pretty nice in the morning, but it was getting hot when we arrived, so the indoor area was our pick.

The menu changes from time to time, ordering is done via picking from the list shown by our server on a mobile device. For our lunch, we went for the classics – lontong darat & Laksa Johor with some teh tarik ais.

I’ve always had my lontong the usual way with sauce, so this was my first time having it dry (lontong darat means “landed” lontong) and I really enjoyed the thick kuah/sambal that gives it a stronger taste profile, and goes really well with the nasi impit within. I can probably have this weekly without getting bored.

The laksa Johor too had a thick kuah and plenty of fresh greens with spaghetti noodle (yes, spaghetti noodle is perfectly normal for this traditional dish in Johor). It tasted as any competent laksa Johor should be.

While the food at Kecur was certainly above average, it is the ambiance and unique environment that we really enjoyed. If you’re into a one of a kind dining spot, do check them out.

Never had lontong darat before…the one I’ve had comes with a yellow curry (I think it’s called kuah lodeh?) with a dollop of sambal. The laksa Johor looks nice….and psst, I think you need to change your post title…hehehe! 😉
