I am a fan of kuih teow soup, and often said that it is a Penang hawker dish that is under represented in Klang Valley, taking a backseat to the more popular char kuih teow, prawn mee, and laksa alike. So yah, during this MCO period, I do start to miss having it, hence I made it a point to re-create a version of my own the other day with some leftover pork bone radish soup that I had the other day.

Here’s how you can do yours too with this simple recipe.

home made kuih teow soup

Ingredients:

  • soup stock (I used leftover pork base radish soup, you can use chicken soup too)
  • pork belly meat (chicken/duck are good too)
  • kuih teow
  • spring onion
  • bean sprouts
  • beef ball/ fish ball
  • cili padi and soya sauce as condiment

Instructions:

  • cook the meat in soup stock till soft
  • remove and cut into bite size
  • add kuih teow in soup and cook for a minute or two
  • add bean sprouts
  • serve with spring onion on top
  • a dash of garlic oil and lard would work well  here too (I didn’t have)

This turned out to be quite wholesome and comforting, perfect for warming up the tummy.

Ooooo…I love Penang kway teow th’ng! I guess I can try and cook my own here but our kway teow is different – thick, coarse and white, not translucent. I prefer your West Malaysian kway teow, the ones up north especially!

Monica: haha I think opening a restaurant is a lot more complex than just being able to cook a few dishes.

in your previous life, you might have been a thriving hawker in batu lanchang serving up a hundred plates of char koay kak and another hundred bowls of koay teow soup everyday!

Your version of Kuih teow soup looks really scrumptious. The portion of the meat is very big.

I think it’s under represented too…but that’s because I’m one of those who love kuey teow th’ng (or anything in soup). My favourite is the one that kena lock downed for enhanced MCO recently…in PJ Old Town! 😉 That one got like 8 people running it…and it’s just a stall in a coffee shop! O_o
