One of my favorite canned food is the stewed canned pork. It is basically savory heaven contained within a can that can be unleashed upon in the kitchen at your convenience throughout the clock. If I had to build a nuclear bunker, this will definitely be one of the stocked up item for me.
Today, I’m going to share with you one of the easiest ways to make use of this godsend ingredient – by making canned stew pork with potato dish that goes very well with steamed rice.

- one canned stew pork (big)
- 3 potatoes, cut in 1/2 cm thick slices
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, smashed
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon dark soya sauce (optional)

- boil the potato until soft
- heat up cooking oil and fry garlic until fragrant
- add canned pork, add potato
- add dark soya sauce (optional)
- mix well and serve while hot
This dish can be prepared in less than 20 minutes, super simple and positively delicious. Give it a try if you like some of those homey cholesterol laden taste.
I’ve been to Taman Botani in Shah Alam several times, mostly for cycling. The huge park located at Shah Alam offers many kilometers of roads that is closed from traffic for cycling, jogging, and has a host of other nature driven attractions like mini zoo, paddy field, and even a 4-season house.
The most exciting activity at this place though, has got to be Skytrex Adventure.

Several weeks ago when the kids came over during school holidays, we decided to bring them for a little bit of good old fashion obstacle challenge/adventure.
The challenge is split into 3 categories:
- little adventure
- big thrill
- extreme challenge
registration and “training”
The little adventure has a maximum height of 5m and comes with 23 challenges, big thrill with 17 m highest platform and 26 challenges, while the ultimate extreme challenge goes even higher – at 22m and with 34 individual challenges.
They cost RM 35, 45, and 55 each, you can go as a group, a couple, or even just individual, I believe.

Since we were all newbies who only has a little bit of ego, we chose Big Thrill. Now 17 meter may not sound very tall, but once you get on the highest platform and start to look down, it does get pretty scary.
After all, 17 meter is equivalent to about 5 story high.

To start off, we were fitted with the safety harness, you’re also encouraged to bring your own gloves as the activity does require protection of your palms.
We then proceeded to the training ground and was taught how to use the equipment properly. There are two carabineer/clicky thingy and they are designed to have one hanged onto the cable at all time, you literally cannot detach yourself from the safety cable throughout the whole challenge.
The obstacles include climbing vertical ladders, flying fox, hopping through planks way high on the tree line, and more. It was very exciting and also physically exhausting.

There are instructors in many of the stations coordinating and helping you, and if you feel that you can’t complete due to fear/exhaustion or whatever reasons, there are also exit points to get off the challenge.
If you’re looking for a few hours of thrill in the greens and being able to do it safely, check this place out. After all, it’s only half an hour’s drive from KL.
I’m quite sure we’ll be back for the Extreme Challenge next time.

Last night we found ourselves at Subang Empire Mall looking for a place for dinner, partly thanks to the rain. We walked around abit on the lower ground floor and came across Ole Ole Bali. Well, the interior looked nice, and there’s quite a healthy crowd, on top of that, a 10% discount for Public Bank credit/debit card, so we stepped in.

Now I’ve walked past Ole Ole Bali plenty of times, and for some reasons, the (wrong) preconception that “Balinese food with no babi guling can’t be any good” always prevented me to give it a try. Well, I’m glad we finally did.
As it turned out, this is the same chain that ran Bumbu Bali, a restaurant in Puchong that was featured in this blog 10 years ago. I remembered that they offered pretty good food, but haven’t been back many times since thanks to Puchong being one of the least accessible places on the planet if you aren’t a fan of getting stuck in traffic.

Well, anyway, the restaurant is certainly better than the one I went to 10 years ago. Decoration, comfort, and choices in menu are all superior.
I ordered the nasi campur while Haze had sup buntut.
The nasi campur (RM37) came with grilled lemongrass prawns, squid, fish, beef (you can also have chicken), and sate lilit. Then there’s lawar kacang (beans salad), rempeyek (anchovy crackers), sambel terasi & sambel matah (from raw lemongrass & shallots). It was certainly a huge offering and amazingly everything tasted rather awesome. The seafood grilled to perfection, and they also manage to have the beef soft & succulent. I really liked it. Sambel matah is a revelation and I think we’re going to try to make some at home.

The sop buntut (RM 17) is the authentic Indonesian style oxtail soup that comes with rice cakes (similar to ketupat) and vegetables, It was very flavorful too.
I had the avocado juice to complete my meal and was thoroughly satisfied.
Ole Ole Bali also serves steak, lamb chop, pasta, sandwich and burger in addition to traditional Balinese fair, will surely check them out more in the future.

Over the X’mas and New Year holiday, we went to a friend’s place in Serendah for an overnight excursion and a little bit of R&R, and of course, one of the agendas is to try some of the more unique foods in the area.
If Klang is famous for bak kut teh and Penang for char kuih teow & laksa, then tilapia must be Rawang’s speciality.
R Cheng Tilapia Wantan Mee at Rawang
So the next morning, we went to R Cheng Tilapia Wantan Mee to try this rather unique dish only available here.
The restaurant is located in a residential area just a few minutes away from Rawang town center. Seating area is semi-alfresco, with a roof, no walls, and plenty of ceiling fans to keep you somewhat comfortable. While there are quite a few dishes to choose from the menu, the star here is the tilapia.

There are six choices to choose from, and you can have them with rice, or in their unique wantan mee style. We chose the latter and tried all six flavors.
Each dish is priced at RM 13.50 comes with a portion of wantan mee and a small tilapia that’s either steamed of deep fried. The flavors are:
- 金针 golden mushroom – classic with steamed tilapia, enoki, garlic, & ginger
- 酱蒸 bean sauce – brown bean sauce with deep fried tilapia
- 干煎 deep fried – self explanatory, with some chili too
- 油滑 classic oiled – steamed with soya sauce & oil, plenty of fried garlic
- 咖喱 curry
- 东炎 tomyam

The wantan mee was rather good, the fish tasted fresh and flavorful regardless of the preparation method, and the different sauces were all spot on, including the tomyam flavor (usually lacking in Chinese shops). Go for the deep fried version if you struggle with fish bones, otherwise the steamed version gives you slightly more flavors.
Additionally, we also had some chicken wings (RM 3.50 each) to “supplement” the meal. They were pretty good too, crunchy on the outside, juicy inside, with good belacan taste infused.
If you are looking for something special, this is definitely worth checking out.

After last year’s haitus on Xmas Eve Party, we hosted another one to greet the end of 2015, this time at our new place at Shah Alam.

This year we decided to cook a few dishes since we now actually have a kitchen capable of doing so. Haze prepared some meatballs, both Swedish & with tomato sauce, while I prepared some baked potato wedges, chicken wings, and beef stew. We also had some spaghetti to go around, and Kelly also brought some otak otak from Muar as supplement. Plenty of food
The party’s a bit smaller scale this time, we purposely kept it so, plus we didn’t send out the invitation until a week or so before the event. Still, it was nice to be able to spend this occasion with a bunch of friends.
The attendees include Zess, Michael, Liling & Iris, Ken & Mom, Lance & Melissa, Yee Hou, Kelly, Latha, Sheng, Huey Fang & Chan, Haze & yours truly. 16 in all, or 16.5 if you count the one in the oven (Mel). Less rowdy, more chilled, and definitely no need for police/security guard to end the session.
As usual, we had a good time doing the “gift grab” method of exchanging x’mas gift. There were photo frame, whisky, wine, personal hygiene product, portable lamp (damn I wanted it!), star wars memorabilia, and even a fake silver bison skull up for grabs.
Instead of loud rock music, we had x’mas songs on Spotify, and instead of smoking and over drinking, we sipped and ate, guess that’s part of the growing up process? For those who missed it this time, we’ll try to organize this better next year!
