Many of you undoubtedly know that Jalan Sayur in Pudu is one of the best places to go for supper. The street is closed for vehicular traffic at night and transformed itself to a Malaysian style alfresco dining area with little regards to proper hygiene or safety code, just the way we like it.

However, there are also a some delicious stuff to be had if you’re a breakfast person.

Head into the street in the morning and go all the way until the end (pass Chun Kee Hakka Noodle) and you’ll find a shack on your ride, just across the church.

In the morning, they serve a selection of familiar breakfast dishes – wantan mee, curry mee, chicken horfun and so forth. The best part though, is that you can sorta make a combination of different things, if you like.

And today I just want to point out that if you order a plate of wantan mee, add some minced meat, and then pour a bit of those thick & creamy curry sauce on top, you’ll end up with something that makes your stomach happy for the rest of the morning.

So if you’re around town for breakfast, check this place out.

A few weeks ago while walking from KLCC to Pavilion I strolled pass Vipod Residence and noticed that there’s a new Japanese restaurant opening up on the ground floor – Oribe Sushi. I’m a huge fan of proper Japanese food, so there’s no other reason needed to give it a try.

A peek on the menu shows that Oribe Sushi only serves Omakase (literal translation: “I’ll leave it to you”). For lunch, there are 4 choices priced at RM 88, RM 150, RM 180, and RM 250. Dinner omakase are priced at RM 120, 168, 198, and 350.

We took a seat at the sushi bar and then of course, I chose the cheapest – “Seto”.

This set starts out with appetizer in the form of some carefully stirfried bean sproud, tiny shrimps, and other vege.

Then there’s the chawanmushi that’s smoother than most tofufa I’ve had, it was delicious. So far, so good.

Then came what we were here for – the sushi.

The experience here is pretty unique. While seated at the sushi bar, the chef is dedicated to your meal. He will prepare one sushi meticulously, serve it on your plate, explained what it is, and then only start preparing the next piece after you’ve consumed the current piece.

This way, the sushi never sit on the plate longer than a few seconds (or however long you take to snap a pic to show your jealous friends on instagram).

The 8 types of sushi we had were sea bass, flounder, bluefin tuna, yellow tail, mackerel with seaweed, barracuda, scallop, and ikura.

These were not just simple slices of fish (or other seafood) on rice, but also with addition of seaweed, blow torch treatment, bits of citrus peel, a wipe of sauce/oil and so forth. It was a work of art. I found myself not even really needing those grated fresh wasabi to accompany the sushi.

The ginger used here too is not of the usual variety. It was less spicy but carries a slightly sweet flavor which I really liked. They will refill it should you find yourself finishing them like I did.

After 8 pieces of nigiri sushi, we were treated with three pieces of vegetable roll (I think it was Japanese bamboo shoots?) to end the main course part of the meal.

Our omsake ended with a small bowl of miso soup and mochi with red bean as dessert. While the dessert wasn’t as exquisite as the other dishes, it was certainly not disappointing either.

While RM 88++ is certainly no chump change for lunch, I do feel that it provides value for money so far as the quality of food, and the excellent services goes. If you are a fan of proper Japanese food, this is one place you should check out.

Nasi campur, or Malay mixed rice, is usually a pretty uneventful type of meal. You pick a few dishes from a couple dozen precooked “lauk” to put on top of steamed rice, and go about filling up your stomach.

Unless of course, you head to Istana Budaya.

Most people associates Isatana Budaya as a place where you dress up to catch a fancy play such as Puteri Gunung Ledang, but did you know that they also serve perhaps one of the fanciest nasi campur over lunch?

Well, I was just as surprised when I got there the first time with a couple of my colleagues who are just as big a fan of good food as me – Razi & Amalia.

The nasi campur spread here looks as good as any hotel grade buffet, complete with a huge selection of halal dishes, including appetizer, main course, dessert, and even selection of kuih and other tea time favorites.

The modus operandi though, is the same as any nasi campur places – fill up your plate, go about filling it up with your favorite dishes, head to the counter to pay, and makan!

Other than rice dishes, there are also noodle dishes such as laksa. I also recommend ending the meal with a small container of those really sinful yet delicious sago gula Melaka.

Prices are not out of the ordinary, a usual meal cost less than RM 10 in an air conditioned dining hall, and being located at a big function building, parking is not a problem either. Have a try!

My first experience having non-claypot bak kut teh was actually at the Mo Sang Kor branch at Taman Berkeley almost 3 years ago. It was quite an experience.

Fast forward to June 2015, just a few weeks before we move to Shah Alam and in the midst of house renovation, I thought I should try the original Mo Sang Kor bak kut teh shop, as part of my aim to try as many different bak kut teh restaurants in Klang as I possibly can.

Update 2019: this branch has since closed.

Located at Jalan Chan Ah Choo, Pandamaran. The restaurant is no different from many other bak kut teh shops littered along the same road – semi open concept with basic plastic tables & chairs as well as kettle with boiling hot water for your tea.

As usual, you can bring your own tea leaves (like all proper Klang people), or asks for house supplied tea that usually comes in a few varieties.

For the two of us, we ordered a portion of “tua kut” (big bone), “kah wan” (fatty meat near leg), and a bowl of pork intestine.

The taste was pretty much spot on and actually identical to the version at Taman Berkeley. It had a strong herbal taste with a very slight bitter after taste which I like. Like most Klang bkt, the pork was boiled to perfection and so soft you can peel them off the bone with a spoon.

Most importantly, don’t let the garlic goes to waste either, they are absolutely beautiful.

Compared to Ah Her bak kut teh (one of our favorites), the soup is slightly less thick but has a stronger herbal taste. I like them both.
