A few days before the CNY holiday season got started, together with a few familiar faces, I was invited to the launch of PETRONAS Chinese New Year Coffee Break at the Tapah R&R’s PETRONAS station.

For those who are not familiar, the PETRONAS CNY Coffee Break is one of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programs run by PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad. This particular program has been running for the past 16 years.
It is actually a very simple program – PDB invites motorists to the participating service stations along major travel routes to collect a special PETRONAS Coffee Break pouch together with other goodies, including a can of Wonda coffee, Munchy’s Oat Krunch, Lexus Chocolate and Chinese New Year ang pow packets; and you don’t even need to purchase anything to collect the pouch.

As part of the same program, PETRONAS also contributes RM 20,000 in PRIMAX 95 fuel for St. John Ambulance of Malaysia in their effort to patrol major highways. This particular aspect of fuel contribution has been carried out for the past 21 consecutive years.
With the current fuel price, that translate to some 11764 liters of fuel. That’s plenty of miles on the highway.

PDB Managing Director & CEO Mohd Ibrahimnuddin Mohd Yunus and Retail Business Senior General Manager Shaharuddin Muhammad Sidek were on the ground and launched the program by initiating the lion dance (have you ever see a lion inside Mesra store?) and giving out the coffee break pouch to several unsuspecting motorists. They also took the opportunity to wish all Malaysians who are celebrating CNY a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year, and a safe journey home.

The PETRONAS Coffee Break program was held on the 14 to 15 February and 21 to 22 February at 39 participating PETRONAS Stations. I’m pretty sure similar program will be held the next CNY season.

A week or so ago I was invited by Haze’s friend to a small food review session at Scott Garden’s AfterWerk pub/bar. This isn’t usually my type of place to look for food, but since it’s a friend, why not?
As it turns out, you can sometimes find decent food at unsuspecting places.

AfterWerk is operated by the same people who used to run Pedro’s Place, a new management/owner for the last half a year or so.
The restaurant/pub is located on the left corner of Scott’s Garden on the ground floor, you can park your car in the huge indoor parking, or right outside the restaurant aka valet/illegal style.
Like most pubs/bar, AfterWerk offers a variety of cocktails, beer, whisky, and there’s dart machine, and most importantly, an ass-kicking 8 piece Filipino band that actually sings very well! (We stayed for quite a few songs after the food review session)

Anyway, since the owner previously ran proper restaurant, food isn’t something of an after thought here. The menu consists of a mixture of Mexican/Western and local dishes. Prices are pretty decent, as with most pubs that usually make a lion’s share of their revenue from drinks instead.
For the purpose of this visit, we sampled four of their dishes.
We kicked off the night with French Onion soup that comes with a floating piece of cheese and a side of garlic/cheese bread. The serving was rather big for a starter but I don’t even mind, it was really delicious. The savory of cheese with those broth really worked well.

Next up was their Chili Beef Burger. This rendition of the popular American staple comes with a rather thick patty and plenty of chili with a layer of melted cheese on top. You can request the chili to be mild or really hot, we had it probably somewhere in the middle.
While I liked the chili, I thought the thick patty was not nearly as fatty as I usually liked them. Then again it is probably a good thing for those who are slightly more health conscious. A pretty decent burger otherwise.

The four of us then shared a half rack of pork ribs. The ribs properly prepared and came with a layer of BBQ sauce plastered all over. The meat was soft and savory, I find myself really enjoying it despite being pretty stuffed from the previous two courses. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of pork ribs. It could maybe be slightly saltier, but I’m just nitpicking.
Other than the three dishes, we also sampled one of their beer food – jalapeno poppers. This turned out to be pretty hot, and perhaps slightly too hot even for me but I imagine it’d be pretty awesome with some ice cold beer. Jalapeno is like any peppers, the level of spiciness is not constant, sometimes you get it hot, and sometimes they are mild.

If you’re close to the vicinity of Scott Garden, AfterWerk is definitely a decent place to check out if you’re up for a beer of three, but I would also consider it a good option for some late dinner as well.

I first got to know about red wine mee suah from having a bowl at Suan’s sister’s place, with her mom being the cook. I was intrigued by this simple yet unique dish. From then on, I was hooked… and didn’t know where I could find them outside of Foochow strongholds like Sibu & Sitiawan.

Then one day after one of my dental visit for invisalign check up at Mydentist.my at Jalan Ipoh, I somehow ended up at Chin Heng kopitiam while looking for a quick lunch.
Looking at the big menu plastered on the wall, I found it! Red wine mee suah! I gotta have it, so I did.

The red wine mee suah (RM 9) here comes with plenty of ginger with stripes of mushroom and chunks of chicken. The soup isn’t as thick as I wanted, but according to the operator (2nd generation foochow from China) you can always ask to have less soup and they’ll prepare it to be thicker. It is a pretty good version nonetheless.
Restaurant Chin Heng also serves lamb chop, chicken chop, pork chop, and quite a variety of noodle/kuih teow. It is pretty popular with the office crowd nearby, but I think it is a place to check out even if you don’t work nearby.

Instant noodle plays a rather pivotal role in many of our lives, I remember as a college kid many a year ago, there would always be a cabinet full of instant noodles in pretty much everyone of my classmate’s kitchen. After all, when mom isn’t around, this is the simplest thing one can cook up under 5 minutes.
Mi Sedaap Mi Goreng Ayam Krispi
In the earlier days, you pretty much have only either curry or chicken flavored soup version of instant noodle, but soon enough some of the more creative minds decided that making it a “kon lou” (dry version) would be pretty neat, so we improvised.
I also sometimes like to separately fry some chopped garlic or shallots to give the simple dish a bit of a kick.
Well, now we have instant noodle that is formulated purposely to be prepared the dry version, and with the latest Mi Goreng Ayam Krispi from Mi Sedaap, there’s even pre-prepared crispy bits!

I got my hands on a few packets of Mi Sedaap Goreng Ayam Krispi to try it out.
The instant noodle comes with three separate packs of seasoning. there’s the trio of soya sauce, chili sauce, and seasoning oil; seasoning powder; and of course, those crispy bits.
Cooking instruction is just like most instant noodle, boil it for 3 minutes and then mix well with seasoning. Finally, add the crispy bits on top. For a slightly more “complete meal”, I usually add an egg (either fried or carefully boiled without breaking.)

So how does it taste?
Well, I must say that it didn’t disappoint. The crispy bits do give this version of Mi Sedaap a little extra that I find quite satisfying. I also particularly like their version of chili sauce that has a stronger tomato aroma to it, reminding me somewhat of jawa mee, quite interesting.
As for the noodle itself, they are quite springy and isn’t overly thick either. Additionally the texture is quite robust and does not break into smaller pieces.
