ais kacang, ais, ais kacang
bila cuaca panas merasa dahaga
singgah di gerai ais kacang di minta
susu dan jagung
kacang dan lengkong
air gula berwarna
campur semua, enak rasanya
kegemaran kita semua
This is the childhood song that is most memorable to me, and I’ll explain later, but first, remember the post I penned on this blog last week about four mascots spotted at Bukit Bintang?
Now we know what it is all about, the four mascots actually represents four flavors of milk. A reader guessed ice cream, pretty close, since ice cream’s main ingredient is milk anyway.
They four of them represents Dutch Lady red bean, moo melon, caramel toffee, and sweet corn.

vote for your favorite flavor
From now until the 28th of May, 2011, you’ll be able to vote for your favorite flavor on the Dutch Lady Milk Election page on facebook.
Just like any elections, there is a big stake here – the flavor with highest vote will be the newest addition to Dutch Lady Malaysia’s UHT milk range.

Every flavor also has its own supporter too. The talented Ziana Zain supporting Red Bean. We have Faizal Tahir the singer-song writer behind Sweet Corn. Our very own super model Amber Chia with Moo Melon, and Football twins national starters Aidil and Zaquan (hey we won the Tiger cup!) pulling their collective weights for Caramel Toffee flavor.

Of course now you know which is my favorite flavor based on the ais kacang song in the beginning of this post. Red beans of course! It is not really just a nostalgic flavor for me, but one that I really love to have in my ice cream, dessert, kuih, and if possible, milk.
So I’ve casted my vote for red bean, and I urge you to vote too! Undi laaaa untuk Malaysia so we can make this a reality! Red bean milk will be fantastic.
The steps are simple, to ensure fairness, there’s only 1 vote per person but you are allowed to change your vote up until 28th of May, 2011. Go to the facebook page to do it ya!

While you’re there, click “Like” for the page too. If we achieve 200,000 likes, Dutch Lady will donate 20,000 milk packs to charity. Now who says your click doesn’t count?
I couldn’t really find the old ais kacang song on youtube but here’s the MTV created in support for Dutch Lady Red Bean milk, pretty catchy ya?
To those who loves a good bowl of Loh Mee, Ulu Yam is undoubtedly what springs in mind. For those who has never heard about Ulu Yam, it is sort of a half way point between KL and Fraser Hill, within Batang Kali.
You can also go to Genting via Ulu Yam if you’re the sort who enjoys a bit of spirited driving on winding roads with good scenery, though the journey takes quite a bit longer (and further) compared to the standard toll way.

Swee Yen restaurant at Ulu Yam Lama
A couple weekends ago Haze and I had a little getaway at Fraser’s Hill, and since I have yet to try the famous loh mee, we decided to do just that on a pit stop before heading back to KL.
The only problem about finding Loh Mee in Ulu Yam is that.. which one?! It is almost like the case of Klang bak kut teh or Ampang yong tau foo where a relatively small area is littered with several outlets offering essentially the same thing, you have to know which one to choose.
There were different recommendations from Garmin GPS, Google Maps, and blogs. I settled on Kim’s blog entry. If it’s good enough for her mom, it will be good enough for me.

glorious lor mee, look at the lard!
Since there were just two of us, we ordered a bowl of Loh Mee for two and a lala with superior soup as side order.
The Loh Mee were huge (I think people Ulu Yam must eat only 1 meal a day or something), and true to the reputation, it was fantastic!
There’s a pretty strong taste of vinegar in the thick soup but in a good way. There were also bits of fried lard, some prawns, and meat to complete the dish. It’s easily one of the best Central style Loh Mee I’ve tried.

lala in superior soup
Then there’s the lala in superior soup. This too didn’t come in a small dish, and would probably be a serving for 4 in KL. The shellfish were quite big and juicy, with the superior soup carrying a kick thanks to the addition of chili padi and a healthy dose of ginger with plenty of coriander.
Good stuff.

check out the huge portion of lor mee
It was definitely a very satisfying lunch and we didn’t even manage to finish everything, the servings were just too big.
The bill came to RM 33 for everything, including drinks too. Glad that crazy inflation hasn’t hit small town as bad yet. I’m gonna go there again next time and order terrapin!

Last Thursday evening I stopped by Bangsar Shopping Centre right after work to attend the launch of ESPN Castrol Football Crazy’s Longest Pass launch.
At the launch was none other than the former England international and Liverpool legend himself, Steve McMahon, with hosts Adam C and Patricia K.

launching of ESPN Castrol’s Football Crazy longest pass
Castrol Football Crazy’s Longest Pass is an attempt to unite football fans across Asia by stringing up a never ending football pass on video. Steve kicks off the launch here by doing his pass, and you can be a part of this too. (I did, in fact, check out the video below)
Do keep in mind to have the video under 20 seconds though, and if you don’t have any fancy moves, keep it simple, like I did in the video (and not like the other 2 professional football tricksters)

a photo with the Liverpool legend Steve McMahon
I had my Malaysia jersey handy during the event as I had my regular futsal game later at the same night anyway.
I always thought Steve McMahon is this really serious lad but he turned out, as people who knows him says, a teddy bear. Very friendly and approachable guy for sure. I of course, didn’t leave without having a photo op with the legend.

Joshua & I have a chat with Steve McMahon
After the official launch we even had a chance to have a chat with Steve himself, with regards to the current football scene in BPL, Champion’s league, and we even touched on the local scene.
The professional pundit and I both agreed that it’ll be a touch match for MU against Barca, while Joshua is already worried if the referees might favor the Spanish giants.. we shall see!

ex Liverpool vs the current hardcore MU supporter
Look at the photo above, Joshua was actually wearing an MU t-shirt, and Steve is totally cool with that despite himself being from Liverpool, MU’s arch-rival. I kinda wished that Steve would give him more of a hard time, hehe.

Adam C, one of the hosts of Football Crazy
I’ve taken my video, and now it is your turn too, do it and you’ll be able to get on TV and show off your talent (up to 20 seconds anyway. hehehe), it is that simple.
Find out more at Castrol Football Crazy Facebook page, in the mean time, get that video recorder ready!
KFC is always one of my favorite places to be. I remember back in the days when I was a boy, my late dad would bring the family to KFC once a month or so as a treat. It was always a very anticipated event.
A little bit of memory quiz for those who listens to Light & Easy FM (aka old!), do you still remember that KFC was once a sit-down restaurant? Ahh.. the memories.

KFC outlet at Suria KLCC
To this day, I must get my KFC fix at least a couple times a month over lunch. Thus it came as no surprise that I”m always interested when KFC introduces new product on the market.
And this time around I think KFC has hit the bulls eye. I believe the new KFC Chicken Chop is going to be a winner.

KFC chicken chop, with sweet corn, potato wedges, and mushroom sauce
9 out of 10 times at KFC, I order the Original Recipe snack plate with drumstick and thigh. So what could be better than that?
The original recipe drumstick & thigh chicken ….. BONELESS! This is just sheer genius, which made me wonder why they haven’t taught thought of this before.

boness OR chicken thigh & drumstick, mushroom sauce, yums!
The KFC chicken chop also comes with sweet corn (again, without the corn stem!) and potato wedges on the sides. To top it off, there’s the mushroom sauce too, with chunks of button mushroom in it.
Best of all, this wholesome meal with a Mountain Dew is only priced at RM 9.90. That’s cheaper than some hawker stalls already if you factor in drinks, and you won’t get the clean environment and air conditioning at kopitiam that’s for sure.

finger lickin’ good!
The KFC chicken shop is served with fork & knife too, but nothing’s stopping you from eating without utensils so that you can have that finger lickin’ good experience!
OK, writing this has been tough on my stomach, I think I’m gonna have this for lunch today!
I was at Bukit Bintang last Monday (don’t you just love replacement public holiday on Mondays?) doing a bit of walking around hunting for some food when I spotted these four mascots just outside Pavilion KL.
Even at around this area, mascots aren’t exactly the most common things you spot. I thought these guys are usually at stadiums and there were never more than 2 of them who usually don’t like each other very much. hehe.

And it seems to be that they are helping people to cross the busy Jalan Bukit Bintang, cute.
The four mascots drew quite a crowd and soon as they’re at the side of Sephora (who designed that building anyway!?), people started taking photos of them, so I did too.

From what I could gather, the four of them represents flavors of certain product. The brown one took a bit of guessing but it should be caramel toffee, the green one is unmistakenly melon, then there’s red bean and sweet corn too.
The four of them were like celebrities at the side walk, with plenty of people surrounding them, especially the kids, it was a rather joyous atmosphere with their presence.

I think the mascots must be something bigger, there was a TV host of sort that was on location filming them too. I tried to eavesdrop a bit but didn’t manage to catch what she said though. I think we should find out soon anyway.

Before moving on, I took a couple pictures with the cheerful looking mascots. Don’t laugh, there’s a kid in every one of us
Not coincidentally, red bean & melon are two of my favorite flavors too.
Someone shot videos and posted them on youtube, this one’s showing the four little dudes having a chat with the police. hahaha, and there’s this one where they took the LRT too, I wonder how they went through the ticketing gate. The melon’s waistline isn’t exactly small.
Did you catch these guys anywhere?
