When adopted by a different culture and people, food often gets adapted as well. Bit by bit, the authenticity gets assimilated to the local taste, and after decades, you get something that bears very little resemblance to its origin. This however, does not mean that the end product is necessarily inferior.

Two such cases on the opposite sides of the world are Chinese food in US, and western food here in Malaysia. You can’t find General Tso’s chicken (my fav!) in a traditional Chinese restaurant here, nor can you order chicken chop with Hailam sauce in Washington DC.

Update 27/10/2013: The owner has sold this stall, it is no longer Freddy Western

Freddy Western Food at Restaurant Millenium 86

Which brings us to today’s topic, Freddy Western Food, comes with awesomesauce, literally.

We discovered this stall by chance one day when Kerol ordered chicken chop from this stall that looked surprisingly… clean. Her verdict was very positive, and if Kerol said it is good, it must be, she’s got one of the fussiest tongues among the gang.

pork chop, chicken chop, lamb chop
pork chop with hailam sauce, chicken chop with mushroom sauce,
pork chop with mushroom sauce, lamb chop with black pepper sauce

A couple nights ago we headed over to give this place an introduction to Suanie since she just got hit by a chicken chop phase (to go along with her Teow Chew porridge and pan mee phase concurrently)

I had the pork chop with hailam sauce (RM 9),  Haze ordered lamb chop with pepper sauce (RM 9.50), Horng had pork chop with mushroom sauce (RM 9), and Suanie, of course, ordered chicken chop with mushroom sauce (RM 8.50).

While the pork could be just a bit juicier (due to the cut, I think), the sauce was really, really good. Good enough to overcome the slight dryness of the meat. Suan was very happy with her chicken chop, as does Haze with her lamb chop that came with a bit of bone marrow too.

There’s another secret under the meat – mash potato with freshly fried bacon chips. The little touch really made the dish yummy max!

While there are other more famous Western Food stalls such as those in SS3 near Shell petrol station, this is the first one of this kind that I found worthy of a blog post. Give it a try, I think they serve pretty good spaghetti too!

It has been awhile since I had chicken chop. I think I may had it at the Coliseum Cafe on Jalan TAR many many years ago. BTW, does the restaurant still exist? I don’t live in KL at the moment.

Dude, Most people go there for Ahwah(阿華) hokkien noodles. Do check out his moonlight kuehteow…It’s ze BEST!! If you want authentic Hainanese chops, head over to Yut Kee or Coliseum Cafe!!

    gnoey,
Yah Ahwah is nice but this chicken chop’s really good too. You can’t exactly brush it aside and recommend only Coliseum/Yut Kee without trying it first, kan? Plus those other 2 places are not exactly nearby for PJ folks

    KY,
As a matter of fact, I did try Freddy’s already. While his serving is quite decent,I reckon he’s still a level below those 2 places I’ve mentioned earlier. Maybe as you’ve said, it is a closer place for PJ folks when they fancy some localise western food cravings!

    Horny,
There ARE authentic Hainanese chops around. It is not necessary for an object to originate from Hainan to be able to use/carry the Hainanese name. It could have been that these hainanese chops cooking style were created by Hainanese working in Malaysia during the colonial days. Now, go out there, get a life and don’t get so techie about it. (no offend ya) 😀

    Horny,
How can you say Hainan sauce is weird when you can accept:

    1. Tartar sauce (Why? got so much tar inside until need to to put 2 “tar” words in the name??)

    2. Thousand island sauce (WAAAH! got so many islands inside the sauce one ah?Damn Keng!)

    3. Bad Ass Coffee (Now now.. don’t tell me you really believe these coffee originated from a bad fcuking ass now, don’t ya?)

The list goes on. and on.

Get a life, mate. Yes a horny one will do just fine, thanks!

Haha  , i agree with you about food changing to suit local tastes. i am an expat Malaysian living in New Zealand and i cannot find any western food like the type at Freddy’s in new zealand at all. I quite miss it actually.

At the same time, Chinese food here is strange as well, either because its cooked mainland China style, or suited to local tastes which is totally different.

Luckily, there are still pure malaysian restaurants here to remind me of home.

Looking at this site is making me a bit homesick, especially for the food.

Give me a yell if you want to know more about NZ.

It’s Confirmed, Freddy is gone and replaced by Eddy, who simply and lazily just removed the “FR” from FREDDY, to become EDDY WESTERN. The Food’s lousy and very forgetable and the fries are of the cheapest grade and quality.
