A few weeks ago my buddy Terence called up and then passed the phone to Colin, and I was invited to a food tasting session.
At first I thought it was for TDH (Tom Dick and Harry’s), the popular watering hole at TTDI, but when I reached there with a hungry stomach a couple weeks ago, it turned out to be the restaurant right upstairs of TDH – Hoofed.

To be honest, I hadn’t know there’s a restaurant above TDH despite the numerous visits there. I guess it doesn’t help that one rarely gets to leave TDH with very clear vision at the end of the night.
Hoofed is a tastefully decorated restaurant, with an ambiance that rivals many a five star hotels. I particularly love the old school subway style ceiling (Colin had to personally put them on one by one).

In order to maximize the number of dishes we get to try, Hoofed prepared the dishes in small doses. I thought this is a pretty good way of handling food review, much better than having a bunch of people splitting several dishes and everyone ended up having to fight for the good stuff.
The night started with a plate of pretty interesting duck salad that comes with duck breast, century egg, 7/8 boiled egg, and fresh vegetable in vinegrete dressing. A refreshing taste that I haven’t had before, it was pretty good actually.
Hoofed prides itself in serving pork dishes, and they have suckling pig too! (whole piglet at RM 170). I was given a portion, and it was really as good as they come.

Other pork dishes I tried when I went there again for a little xmas gift exchange session last week were the really awesome roast pork, pork ribs, and pasta with fried roast pork.
I’m hesitant to say that it is the best roast pork I’ve had, but it is tough to rate it any lower than the one at Wong Kee, Pudu. They are essentially different, the version here is softer and goes well with mustard, while Wong Kee’s roast pork has a crunchier skin and fatty midsection but slightly tougher meat. They’re equally good in their own way.
Same can’t be said about the pork ribs I ordered though, while it was tender and juicy, I thought it was a tad too sweet for my liking, that kinda masked out the savory part of the meat a little.
Those who had the pasta with roast pork though, swore by it. I didn’t manage to steal some from Winnie, but boy it sure looked good.

Since I didn’t bring the bigger camera for the session, these two collages were actually hand-me-down photos from Hoofed.
The lamb shank is best enjoyed by two person as Horng ordered and couldn’t really finished it all by himself. Haze had the tenderloin steak that turned out to be slightly more cooked that she would have liked it.
I had the grilled fish during the review session and it was very good though.

To me, the most surprisingly dish at Hoofed has gotta be the fried rice. Though this place doesn’t really concentrate on a particular cuisine, fried rice seems to be an unlikely entry in their menu, and it is a damn fine plate of fried rice at that. This, and the pasta with roast pork, should be the must-try dish at Hoofed.
I’ve only tried the brownie with ice cream as far as dessert is concerned. It was good, but to be frank I’m not a big dessert person and would almost always stuff myself with more roast pork instead.

To be frank, not everything at Hoofed is spot on. I love all the pork dishes with the exception of ribs, the fried rice and fish were pretty awesome too. Some of the other dishes however, are still a work in progress, but I am sure with Colin’s attention to detail and constant communication with diners, they will improve in time.
Dishes at Hoofed is priced at a tad above average, but the ambiance and the right dishes do make up for it.

Ladies and gentlemen, today yours truly don on chef’s hat and pretend that I know something about cooking. The recipe you are about to read comes from the Southern part of the country that likes to police the world. Yes, that would be U S of A.
We are going to learn about fried okra, on of my all time favorite beer food that isn’t served in any restaurant this side of Pacific.

First, the ingredients, and they are fairly simple:
- okra (or lady finger, if you prefer)
- half a cup of milk
- one egg
- a cup of corn flour
- a tea spoon of salt
- pepper to taste
- other spices optional (be imaginative, if you would)

Then, the steps, this is child’s play in terms of cooking, no post graduate degree in culinary field is required:
- slice or chop okra into bite size
- beat the egg, milk, salt, pepper, and corn flour in a mixing bowl till even
- coat the okra
- fry till golden brown
- serve while hot!
This is one yummy snack that goes very well with cold beer, Kilkenny, Heineken, Guinness, anything! I brought this as my contribution to Suan’s xmas eve potluck, and was happy that it was well received. Even master chef Lance liked it, and that is plenty good for me 😀
mimi bacon pizza by Haze
Haze came up with this concoction that she called mini bacon pizza. The ingredient’s pretty straight forward:
- bacon (as many slice as you have bread
- pasta sauce (tomato base)
- mozzarella cheese
- oregano spice
- flatten the bread (she had somehow forgotten this part then…)
- spread pasta sauce on bread, then add cheese and oregano
- carefully lay a strip of that precious bacon on top
- roll everything up and hold it with a toothpick
- fry till golden brown (for the health freaks, you can also bake them)
The result certainly did not disappoint either, I liked it a lot too!

Lance brought a pot of clam chowder that had uses some sort of bacon stock, it was by far the best clam chowder I’ve ever had! You can actually order it at bbq-addicts.com, I guarantee that you’ll be 100% satisfied!
Suan cooked up some bacon carbonara that turned out to be the best pasta she’s ever made, Kim too roasted a chicken, very juicy, and tasted plenty awesome right out of her new oven! Horng made some sort of east-meet-west sausage for the potluck.

The little get-together over xmas eve turned out to be a very gastronomically satisfying event. We had a little bit to drink (there’ll be plenty more for NYE in a few days’ time at Michael’s), and spent the night reliving the old tradition of watching Euro Trip all over again.
So how was your xmas?
Steamboat has always been one of my favorite type of Chinese food. There are mainly two types of steamboat places around, ala carte/set, and buffet style. While some swear by the buffet places such as Yuen at Sunway, I actually prefer the former version more. I find it usually a lot less stressful, and you don’t ever get the feeling of having to try to gorge yourself just to squeeze a bigger bang for the bucks.
Xin Chun Steamboat – Pulau Ketam style
A couple weeks ago I joined the guys at a simple dinner at Xin Chun Seafood Steamboat Restaurant at Kota Damansara. The place was pretty busy when we got there, the tables inside the restaurant were all filled up, and there are even tents set next to it shop filled with even more diners.

Since we aren’t exactly teenagers in puberty anymore, only three single set of steamboat is ordered (RM 13.50 per set). The set comes with prawns, dumpling, fish meat, pork ball, fishball, tofu skin, corn & carrot (to sweeten the soup), vegetable, egg, noodle, and a few of those other fishball lookalike thingy.

For good measures, we also ordered a plate of sliced pork and dumpling.
The most important ingredient at these Pulau Ketam style steamboat places is the sambal, and it doesn’t disappoint at Xin Chun. The sambal’s spicy and flavorful, if you like a bit of complexity, add the fried shallots in it.
While the soup isn’t as great as the one with herbs at Damansara Village (extra charge of course), it holds up on its own pretty well. The ingredients were good though, I particularly like the sliced pork and their very yummy dumplings.

Other dishes available at Xin Chun includes crab meehun, lala meehun, deep fried fish head, steamed clams and so forth, perhaps we should try those too next time.
With drinks, our dinner came up to less around RM 15 per person, simple, satisfying, and pretty economical. No wonder there’s the big crowd.

This is the second post on our 4D3N Hong Kong trip that was highlighted by the visit to Hong Kong Disneyland. Here is an almost complete guide to the magical land that is surely a must-visit place if you’re heading to Hong Kong, be it with kids, or just for the kids in you.

Magical Train to Hong Kong Disneyland
Firstly, to get there.
From Hong Kong island, take the train from Central to Sunny Bay station, then hop onto the Magical train that takes you all the way to Disneyland straight up.
The train ride should last a little over 30 minutes, we purchased the 3 day unlimited pass with return trips to the airport that costs 300 HKD. Value for money as the airport trips cost 160 HKD both ways already.

We spent 2 nights at South Pacific Hotel on Hong Kong island, and while that was a pretty good hotel in a nice location with plenty of good street foods (read my account of Street Food in Hong Kong), Disneyland Hotel is in another class on its own. The building was impressive, and really without a doubt, put one in the whole Disney mood.

Snow White was having a photo session with the kids at the lobby while we were checking in. The courtyard at the hotel is just as impressive as the interior and the room we were in. Check out the green maze that’s made out of plants, and I thought these stuff only exists in storybooks.

After having an excellent lunch at the Crystal Lotus restaurant within the hotel (which I’ll blog about soon), we checked in our bags and headed straight to the park with out Disneyland tickets on hand.
There’re free shuttle bus service going around Disneyland park – Disneyland Hotel – Disney’s Hollywood Hotel every 15 minutes or so.

Main Street USA and upcoming Christmas decoration
First stop was Main Street USA. Which was, well, set up to look like a sort of cowboy town in US.
Here you find a lot of souvenir shops and a few restaurants, the Disney parade is usually conducted here too, but at our time of visit they were preparing for the upcoming Christmas decoration so parade was sorta on hold. The gingerbread town in the photo above wasn’t fully ready, but by now they should be. We will come back to Main Street a little later.
Tomorrowland and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster
Going pass the Sleeping Beauty’s castle and made a right turn, we arrived at Tomorrowland. The first attraction we went on was the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster.
The 3D (and super convincing) Buzz gave us the low down and instructions on what we should do, then off we go in the ride. It’s a sort of lasertag ride and you get to shoot targets and keep a score, I got 68800 – pretty impressive for a first timer, not to mention super auspicious too.
And the fun had just begun.

Next we went on the most thrilling ride at HongKong Disneyland – the Space Mountain.
This is a roller coaster that’s in almost total darkness. I don’t know how high we went, but it was pretty high, and insanely fast too. The ride was so fun we ended up doing it twice more on the next day. This is definitely a ride not to be missed if you are a thrill seeker. I tried to take a video but I guess the super low light condition didn’t help.

Next stop was the Fantasyland, and after the thrill and spills at Space Mountain, we decided to have something that is easier on the stomach. We went on the Dumbo’s flying circus. This ride goes pretty high and provides a good bird eye’s view on the whole Fantasyland.
The many adventure of Winnie the Pooh is another ride that I enjoyed a lot. It was like reading a life size animated flip out storybook by sitting on a cart. Pretty cool even for an adult, the kids must love this to bits.

We then head to the Golden Mickeys award show. The broadway style show lasted some 40 minutes and it was a lot of fun, I am left wondering how the actors could do this day in and day out, the performance must have taken a lot of energy, and they have to do a number of shows every day.
Tarzen’s Treehouse and Jungle River Cruise
By the time the show ended, it was starting to get dark already. We went onto the next destination – Adventureland.
The Jungle River Cruise came in 3 languages – Mandarin, Cantonese, and English with a pretty heavy Hong Kong accent. It was an adventurous cruise around the waterway that had a lot of wild animals, head hunters, booby traps, and fire caves. This while the funny narrator cum boatman tried to made us laugh, scared, and slightly wet at the same time.
After that we hop on the raft that takes us to the Tarzen’s Treehouse. The trail going up and eventually down from the treehouse also presents Tarzen’s story as you go, a pretty relaxing attraction. At the top of the treehouse, the entirely Adventureland comes into view.

The announcement for the fireworks came as we were still at Adventureland, so we quickly made our way back to Mainstreet USA where a huge crowd has already built up in front of the Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.
Then there was the fireworks. Fireworks must be one of the most amusing things ever invented, no matter how many times I look at them, I’m still amazed. The backdrop made it that much more beautiful too.

The park came to a close after the fireworks, we worked our way out along with the crowd.
Instead of queueing up for the shuttle bus, we decided to take the pretty long walk back to Disneyland Hotel. That turned out to be a good decision. The walkway from Disneyland to the hotels is actually a beautiful garden that had, among the nicely manicured plants, a stunning fountain too. The weather was very pleasant at 20+ Celsius.
We then had dinner at Chef Mickey’s restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood hotel, which I shall write about soon.

We had 2 days worth of Disneyland Park’s passes, so there was no wasting. After breakfast and a couple pictures with Daisy Duck, we went off to the Park again.

Our first stop was the Autopia, it was sort of a go-kart on track that showcases the future with electric car. This is an attraction that would amuse kids more than adults, but kinda fun nonetheless.
We then hop on the train that goes around the entire park. There’re a surprise on the ride, but I shall not spoil it for you.

We then went on the Space Mountain ride twice more.
There are also quite a lot of street performances around the park, like these two guys above, and also Merlin who speaks Cantonese. Never a dull moment.
Sleeping Beauty Castle, Mickey’s PhilharMagic
Just prior to lunch, we attended Mickey’s PhilharMagic show, a 3D (with glasses) that features not only 3D visuals, but also wind, water, and smell too. That was an interesting experience, I was so glad we didn’t miss it.
After lunch at the Tahiti Terrace, it was time to go back to the hotel to get our bags and make our way back to the airport.
Hong Kong Disneyland certainly didn’t disappoint. You need at least a full day (we did it in 2 half days) to get everything out of it, it’ll be a somewhat tiring day but you’ll surely leave with a smile.
Being a Malaysian, one should embrace every facet of the Malaysian culture, and that naturally includes food. It is hence quite surprising to me that many of us can name more Japanese dishes than traditional Malay dishes.
Welcome to 1Malaysia, and today we are going to Sup Kaww! The very name of the restaurant is a combination of Malay and Hokkien words that simply spells “thick soup”.

The restaurant is situated opposite the side entrance of Kelana Jaya Giant hypermarket, directly behind the Shell that is by the 6-8pm weekday parking lot – LDP.
While not spotting any doors, there’s a big al fresco dining area as well as roof covered tables for your choosing.

The menu here is pretty comprehensive, there are various types of Malay soup (including sup tropedo if you like), vegetable, squid, beef, chicken, and seafood prepared in different methods – masak merah (red sauce), paprik, kunyit, and so on. There’s also nasi ayam (chicken rice) and a few other types of soup noodle too.
For the two of us, I ordered a petai udang (bitter bean with prawns), daging masak merah (beef with red sauce), sup tulang (beef bone soup), and a couple telur dadar (Malay style omelete).

Like most traditional Malay dishes, the prawns in petai udang wasn’t peeled, but it was otherwise a dish with a kick. Being a petai lover, I’d probably ask for extra petai (and them not being split) the next time.
Daging merah was a combination of sweet and spiciness that goes well with white rice.
Haze and KY at Sup Kaww!
The sup tulang though, was really kaww! Very thick and flavourful, and is almost a meal by itself. Telur dadar, well, was just telur dadar, nothing out of the ordinary.
The other dishes I’ve tried there were all pretty good too, but I wouldn’t recommend their tomyam (try the one tomyam at ming tien instead).
