Meng Kee Steamed Soup at Taman Paramount

Meng Kee Steamed Soup is one of those places where I’ve been to so many times that I had always thought that I wrote about it before. A quick search revealed that I haven’t, and there were actually at least a couple sets of pictures taken from this place from quite a while back.

Meng Kee Steamed Soup at Taman Paramount
more than half the menu consists of various steamed soup

Meng Kee is located by the Taman Paramount Giant Hypermarket and Post Office, right next door to one of my other favorite Chinese “tai chau” – Ming Heong.

There are a couple dozen tables sprawling around the area with about three quarter of them totally alfresco style. I wouldn’t go there when it’s raining or even just drizzling, however, on any other given night, you usually have to wait for a table. It is a very busy little corner.

various types of steamed soup and herbal soup, and other dishes

Once you’re seated, it is usually quite a challenge to get the attention of the waiters and secure a menu. Over half of the dishes offered here are steamed soup. You can find anything from “tung kwai”, chicken soup in coconut, peanut, pork tripes, ribs, ABC, black chicken, to ginseng soup.

Most soup come in a single-person serving, with a handful of them for twin sharing. I’ve tried at least half a dozen different types of soup here and for the most part, they’re rather awesome, but perhaps with the exception of pork tripe soup. For a good bowl of pork tripe soup, I’ll head to Weng Soon Jaya at USJ instead.

Other than soup, they serve a few steamed vegetables, tofu, pretty awesome lamb curry, steamed chicken with oyster sauce, and my favorite – three colored steamed egg (with normal egg, century egg, and salted egg).

With the exception of the curry, deep fried and asam fish, almost everything from Meng Kee is steamed or soup. If you’re looking for a healthy meal that is also easy on the wallet (most soup starts from RM 4 to RM 8, and other dishes not over RM 10) too, you know where to go now. :D

    bb8520_home

I like the feel of the new Blackberry 8520 I got from XBerry party, it feels pretty good in my hand. Small, sleek, and rather light even if compared with the normal “dumb” phones.

I also think that the touch pad is actually pretty nifty. While others might prefer the more traditional BlackBerry trackball, I think the touch pad has more longevity and a lot less headache when you’re at a beach (fine grains of sand getting into the trackball can be quite a pita to clean)

If you missed buying the 8520 at RM 888 during the launch, Xpax is now selling the package at RM 998, completely unlocked. Get a unit and join the club yo!

    Happy Mornings, KFC Breakfast!

I gotta admit that I didn’t know about KFC having breakfast menu prior to this advertorial engagement. Needless to say I was actually quite curious about it as KFC has always been one of my favorite fast food chains. In fact, I believe KFC was the first air conditioned restaurant I’ve dined in outside of any wedding dinners attended as a little boy.

This article is supposed to talk about the KFC Happy Morning contest, but since this is primarily a food blog, lets do a food review first!

    KFC breakfast menu
KFC, that’s where I want to be!

So I went to one of the biggest KFC outlets in town, the 350th restaurant at Jalan Universiti one quiet morning to try it out. At 24-hr outlet like this one, breakfast menu runs from 4am to 11am, others are 8-11am. Check the full list of KFC outlets serving the breakfast menu here.

Since I was out on a mission to do a taste test, I ordered up quite a feast. A sausage platter, a.m. twister, a.m. riser (burger), nasi lemak, chicken porridge, and an orange juice for good measure. When I said “eating here”, it was safe to say that the cashier lady was in a bit of a shock.

sausage platter, a.m. Riser, a.m. twister

The sausage platter came with two chicken sausages, the bun that also comes with any KFC snack plate, hash brown, and scrambled egg. Though presentation was not exactly gourmet, the sausages actually tasted pretty good. I suspect they are from the same good quality Ayamas sausages since they are under the same roof. I like the scrambled egg too.

A.m. Riser is a breakfast size burger with a original recipe chicken patty on top of scrambled egg sandwiched in between the sesame seed buns. The taste is pretty close to colonel burger, but with the extra flavor of scrambled egg.

A.m. Twister is a pita wrap with pieces of original chicken, tomato, and some sauce that tasted similar to mayonnaise/tartar. The tomato makes it kinda refreshing and it was actually better than I had expected.

    KFC nasi lemak, chicken porridge
nasi lemak enak, KFC chicken porridge

The KFC chicken porridge actually tasted pretty good too, I like the fact that it comes with crunchy deep fried anchovies. To me, extra pepper is a must, and I kinda wish they serve this on all hours tho.

Nasi Lemak Enak comes with fragrant rice, half a hard boiled egg, three slices of cucumber, and sambal with anchovies. You can also add a piece of fried chicken for good measure, but since I already ordered so much, I didn’t. The sambal was a little too salty and not spicy enough to my liking, I think this dish is still in need of some refinement.

The full breakfast menu and pricing can be found here.

    Got the Curve 8520 already!

It’s out, and I now got not one, but two units of Blackberry Curve 8520 with me from the xBerry launch party last Saturday at Republic, Sunway Pyramid.

I got the phone from the one-day only deal at RM 888 + RM 50 xpax reload + RM 8.50 for a celcom prepaid number. Total damage = RM 945.60.

    xpax xberry launch
brisk business at the launch party, check out the giant 8520

I got the extra unit for a colleague who didn’t want to miss out the deal but couldn’t make it to the party. There were hundreds of people at the event and within a couple hours, half of the 500 allocated units of Curve were already gone.

The phone is now RRP at RM 1188, still a pretty good deal since it’s completely unlock and you’re not tied down with any contract.

Now I’m just waiting for everyone to get their BB services activated so we can have BBM orgies! That’s you Cheesie and Cindy!

Indulge in the Uniquely Singapore Experience

Like a lot of people, Singapore is actually the first country I visited by myself. The first time I went there was just right after collecting my SPM results eons ago. The  goal then, was to secure a place at one of the polytechnics in the republic.

Ultimately, fate has it that I ended up pursuing higher education in the States instead, but the first impression that I got from Singapore was something I never forget. The ultra clean state, efficient transportation systems, the bustling Orchard road, and of course, Sentosa.

    Subway sandwich, pork, Singapore
the real Subway Melt, with bacon

I’ve since been to Singapore multiple times, both for leisure as well as to attend events related to this blog. If I were to plan an itinerary (this is of course, food related) for a one day visit, mine would be like this:

    Right after touch down:

If you’re love sandwich, nothing beats a good Subway Melt that comes with proper ham and  pork bacon, yums! This particular tips was bought to me by Suanie, who insist that we must go to Subway instead of having hotel breakfast. It turned out to be a wise choice.

After breakfast, I’d be heading straight down to the city for some walk & shop. There’s pretty much everything for everyone with a budget, for me, I’ll be checking out camera gears. When the exchange rate is friendly, Singapore is one of the best places to pick up electronics.

MOS Burger – of course, with pork

    Lunch time:

For lunch, I’d be heading to one of the MOS Burger outlets. MOS is a pretty popular Japanese burger chain that has its presence in both our closest neighbors but unfortunately, not in Malaysia. I love their pork burger with rice patty, and there’s still a lot in their menu I need to go through yet. One at a time.

After lunch, I’ll visit Underwaterworld Singapore where one gets to actually get to swim with the dolphins without having to go all the way to Bali. This would be also be fitting to my resume as the president of Aquarium Society back in high school as well as being someone who own a koi pond, yes!

    muallaf the movie
Muallaf the movie, by Yasmin Ahmad

Prior to dinner, I would take an opportunity to catch a movie completely uncensored, or better still, one that is actually banned in Malaysia. Last year we actually watched Muallaf by the late Yasmin Ahmad. A movie shot in Malaysia, by Malaysian director and Malaysian actors, but banned in the country. Nice.

    santouka ramen, singapore
charsiu ramen and gyoza at Santouka Ramen in Singapore

    Dinner:

After spending a few hours at the aquarium, the logical choice would be to eat something that doesn’t involve any fish or marine mammal – RAMEN. This Santouka Ramen place in Singapore does ramen the proper way, with soup that is cooked under the perfect temperature with pork bones.

The one complain I have with Japanese restaurants in KL is that almost all of them are halal, hence robbing the one important ingredients especially when it comes to ramen – pork based soup

    Clark Quay, by the riverside

    Supper:

After dinner, the best place to chill in Singapore would be Clark Quay, the de facto watering hole in the republic. Here you can find drinking places like Brewerkz that actually brew their own beer, and if you feel like dancing, there are plenty of clubs around the area to choose from too.

    Alternative:

If there’s a concert running, you can forget about supper party till you drop. We went to Oasis live in Singapore and was overwhelmed. It was completely awesome! Who’s coming next?

Indulge in the Uniquely Singapore experience! None of the activities described in this post can all be done outside Singapore in one day, and pictures are all taken by me! :D

Ikan Bakar & Nasi Campur at Gerai Pak Lang, Kampung Baru

Kampung Baru is a one of the most interesting areas this site of Kuala Lumpur, within the heart of the city just a stone’s throw away from the KLCC vicinity with it’s glitz and glamor lies a very traditional kampung with proper wooden houses and even chicken roaming on the streets. How this piece of land estimated to be worth up to RM 1.4 billion withstood the lure of development is in itself a marvel in heritage preservation.

I digressed, this is a mainly a food blog, so lets get to the point.

gerai pak lang ikan bakar, kampung baru
Gerai Pak Lang Ikan Bakar, with plenty of dishes besides ikan bakar

Yesterday I followed a handful of colleagues out for lunch, and instead of the usual Nasi Kandar Pelita or KLCC food court, we went all the way to Kampung Baru via the LRT instead.

There are plenty of restaurants on the Jalan Raja Muda Musa, the main food district of Kampung Baru, we settled upon Gerai Pak Lang Ikan Bakar since it was recommended by the lads that this place serves the best nasi campur and ikan bakar in the area.

    malay dishes, ikan bakar
ikan bakar, ulam, and plenty of other lauk to choose from

As you walk into the make shift restaurant under zinc roof, the ikan bakar (grilled fish) station is on the right side. There are freshly grilled ikan pari (stingray), kembung (hard tail), and cat fish for your choosing.

Next to it is a line of various lauk to choose from. There’s beef, chicken, fish, tripes, lung, vegetable, egg, and various other ingredients cooked in a host of different methods, there is also ulam (raw vegetable) with at least 3-4 choices of sambal.

radzi, KY, anas, sofian, diana, shamsul

I picked up a plate of ikan pari bakar with the two sauce, three ladies fingers, a portion of daging kunyit (beef) to go with rice and plenty of curry and sambal. The meat was tasty and not at all chewy, sambal was awesome and plenty hot enough, and of course the ikan bakar too was top notch.

Though we had to walk under the sun all the way back to the train station, the lunch was well worth it.

map to gerai pak lang at Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur

The ikan bakar costs something like RM 4.50 with the rice and beef a further RM 3.50, I also ordered a big glass of orange juice for RM 2.50. In all a RM 10.50 meal that was very very satisfying. The HR & another finance lady merajuk cos Radzi didn’t asked them to tag along, hehe, but I’m sure we’ll go again.
