Ahhh, durian, the king of fruits. The one thing that people usually really hate or really love, just like Hillary Clinton. Fortunately enough, Mell and I are both into this whole durian eating business, though she is quite a bit more hardcore when it comes to this. (remember durian flavored gelato at Freddo?)

aptly named DurianSS2.com
So last Monday we decided to head to SS2 for some durian love at the stalls behind BHP petrol station (intersection of SS2/75 and SS2/24).
I remembered a couple years ago there were two durian stalls side by side enjoying equally brisk business. Then in a moment of epiphany, one of the stalls created a website and put up a big banner saying DURIANSS2.COM. Their business immediately shot up and they’ve been by far the busiest stall ever since. This was also the place we went on Monday.

hand doesn’t smell if you wash it with water from the husk?
The place is a semi permanent set up with plenty of tables and chairs, a basin, and free filtered water to wash down those glorious fruit. There’s quite a big selection of durians, from Raja Kunyit, to the more common D2, D24, and Udang Merah, you can pick you choose. Of course, they are priced differently, as high as RM 22 (for Raja Kunyit), or RM9/RM10 all-you-can-eat buffet style.
Not knowing what we should go for, we told the operator to get us something that is half bitter and half sweet and ended up with XO durian. The relatively thick meat was soft and very flavorful, part bitter, and part sweet. There were about 8-10 pieces of flesh in each of the two durian we had (1.4 and 1.5kg). It was absolutely delicious!

KY and Mell enjoying some durian goodness
Total damage was RM 37, which worked out to be about RM 13 per kilogram for the durian we ordered.
Mell insists that washing the hand with water off the husk of the durian will make sure that you don’t end up with leftover durian smell. I’ve heard about that many times and still find zero scientific basis to the whole exercise, besides, what’s wrong with how your hand smell if your breath is going to be the biggest concern anyway?

the durian stalls are located behind the petrol station

So the RM10 all you can eat thing doesn’t include those ‘branded’ durian?
By j2Kfm on Jun 24, 2009 | Reply
and you’re supposed to drink the water from the husk, to avoid the heaty effect.
yeah, right.

Jys,
Hahaha diamond water for the win! RM 13 KG for the quality we had was pretty fair though I think.

I’m planning to go too. The RM 10 durian buffet sounds good, have passed it by several times. Someone told me this place is there every day of the year, wonder if that’s true since durians are seasonal…
By Robb on Jun 24, 2009 | Reply
die! i wanna eat but it’s so far!
By JD on Jun 24, 2009 | Reply
So does the washing of the hands really work? I’ve only heard of drinking water from it will make sure that you are not heaty from all the durian eating.

Why do I look like some durian crazy freak!

There is another good durian stall in SS2 called “Donald” or “Uncle Donald”.
I believe Uncle Donald’s price is SLIGHTLY lower compared to durianss2.com
They have the buffet “all you can eat” also and free “all you can eat” mangosteen to counter the heatiness.
You should check it out
By farah on Jun 24, 2009 | Reply
those two old-wive’s tips on durian – removing the smell and also avoiding the heatiness – works with my family..
which is why i can whallop 2-3 biji by myself (not ulas, mind you)

gerald,
Ooo counter heat, good idea!
farah,
Wahh, you’re very hardcore. lol

drink the water from the husk too! and add a bit of salt. lalala~~~
By foongpc on Jun 25, 2009 | Reply
Can ‘ta pau’ one or not? Meaning they take out those durians and put in a container for you?
By Yatz on Jun 25, 2009 | Reply
hahahahaha durian breathe smell ftw~!! and the hands smell good too!
By christock on Jun 25, 2009 | Reply
was going to blog about it too! haha we didn’t get to have the buffet though, cause it was sold out when we got there. So for those who want the buffet portions, it’s only those “kampung” ones without brands and you have to go a little earlier
branded ones are as usual: costly! best to find ur fav durian stalls!
By Kevin Yong on Jun 25, 2009 | Reply
The husk of the durian can also get rid of mosquitos, by burning it. But I prefer to use it to defend myself from thieves… Haha…
By KY on Jun 25, 2009 | Reply
Jade Zheng,
Ooo adding salt will really bring down the temperature.
foongpc,
Yes you can tapao too!
Yatz,
Hahah, very subjective right?
christock,
Oh well, cheaper usually means not as awesome I suppose!
Kevin Yong,
I think we can get rid of mosquito by burning a lot of different things.

Wah… The weather is so hot, but the durians look tempting! Don’t mind the hands and mouth smelling of durians. It is the one that goes pssssstttt…. that’s more embarrassing.
Never eat onions, beans and starchy potatoes before and after durian buffet.

Pls don’t eat there. I tried the durian buffet RM10 yesterday and I felt so conned of my money. Here are the reasons:
1) All durians presented to us wwre not ripe, too mushy or had worms. We weren’t expecting top notch but at least something presentable. But we tried 6 durians, only 1 was edible and I am serious. Go visit the other stalls if u must eat the buffet.
2) The long waiting time. The Banglas were taking so long that it got everyone waiting so impatiently for the durians to come to their table. Seeing the disgruntled customers, and being one myself coz we kept calling n calling for them to bring the durian, they only brought one at a time. So this Bangla guy bought us one small durian. I knew i had to wait at least 10 mins after i finish eating this, so i ask him to put 2 at my table. to my horror, he refused and said just eat what u have. the other customers were as shocked as i am coz he had the cheek to say that even when he take so long to bring one durian over.
It was a frustrating experience. Go eat elsewhere.
P/S – During that night (yesterday), we saw at least 2 couples near us leaving as soon as eating js 2 durians, coz of the BAD DURIANS & BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! I tried eating at the other stalls before, and the staff were more than eager to bring me good durians.

Chiqlette,
Very good feedback! Luckily we always ate the normal durian (in this case, XO) and not go for their buffet. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks KY! Here’s a blog link i scoured and found on the net, where many ppl shared their bad experiences too. It’s sad to see them getting richer like this, while we part with our hard earned money, paying them to help them clear old lousy durian stock.

101%(NOT THE DURIAN GRADE !!) AGREED WITH Chiqlette !!! THE SS2 STALLS ARE A BUNCH OF CONMEN.
I PERSONALLY THINK BLOGGERS SHOULD NOT PRAISE SO HIGHLY ON THE SS2 DURIAN STALLS.
THE MORE DEMAND/CROWD MAKES THEM EXPLOIT OR CON DURIANS EATERS MORE.
By KY on Jul 12, 2009 | Reply
Chiqlette,
Thank you for the head up.
LAU LIN,
I guess at the end of the day, durian is still a pretty expensive fruit. Though the marketing method used by this place is a bit of a con job, but if you go for the “branded” durian and not the buffet style then it’s actually pretty reasonable.

I agree, in that case I think we should give other vendors a chance. It’s just that when I was there the service was rather good, I guess I was lucky.

I tried there during friday lunch. The durian is awesome but it a bit expensive though. Go for “udang galah”, its the best flavour they offer.
