KY eats – Soon Fatt Beijing Roasted Goose at Jalan Pasar

I have been a fan of roasted duck for the longest time and usually get my fix at Loong Foong in Taman Paramount whenever temptations got the better of me. While roasted duck is all good, everyone has been telling me that roasted goose is a whole other level altogether when it comes to taste, people like Horng who has been to HK on numerous occasions. As you might have guessed, roasted goose is a rather common dish there.

However, some weird cosmic arrangement has resulted in the relative scarcity of this dish back in Malaysia. They are so rare that so far I am only aware that less than handful of places offer them around KL.

It wasn’t until late last year that I got myself a taste of this Chinese/HK delicacy at a food review session on Canton-i, and I can attest to the claims. Roasted goose is really quite a bit more succulent and juicy compared to duck, not to mention the relative larger portion which makes it easier to eat too.

Since that event, I had been back to Canton-i a couple times only to find out that the roasted goose is sold out every time I get there. Something had to be done, and I vaguely recalled the availability of this dish at Jalan Pasar.

A few clicks on google and a short drive later, a couple colleagues and I arrived at Soon Fatt Beijing Roasted Goose at Jalan Pasar on one fateful Friday afternoon.

For the three of us, we ordered quarter portion of roasted goose (thigh and drumstick portion), another generous portion of char siu (bbq pork) and siu yoke (roasted pork) on the side, three rice and some drinks.

The dishes came with 3 types of condiments: a plum sauce and 2 types of chili sauce. Soup is served with rice as well.

The portion of roasted goose was actually rather big even for 3 of us. The meat juicy and very scrumptious, which leaves me wondering the differences the breast portion would bring since duck breast and duck confit do carry different taste. While the siu yok wasn’t as impressive as Wong Meng Kei, they still tasted pretty good. The char siu though, was actually better than expected, on par with some of the bests in town (such as meng kee at pudu, or Aman Suria’s famous Hakka noodle char siu)

It was a satisfying lunch but also one that came with a pretty steep price. The meal was some RM70 for three of us, still, RM 20+ per person isn’t too exuberant for something you don’t get very often. Now if only this place has air conditioning…

KY sports – Jack of all Trades, Master of None

The photo below is a very partial list of sporting equipments belonging to me. Several badminton rackets, a tennis racket, futsal shoes, tennis shoes, and a tube of shuttle corks.

    Sporting Equipments

Other than these, I have two ping pong bats, a golf glove (yes they don’t come in pairs), swimming trunk, partial set of diving gears, a pair of driving shoes, and recently I’ve just brought an entry level squash racket.

Which basically means that I am playing futsal, badminton, golf, and ping pong on regular basis. Starting to play a bit of squash now, and still plays tennis on and off, trying to get back to diving and perhaps swimming a bit.

I’m a jack of all trade, master of none.

Someone passed me this video today, which kinda made me think if I had the same moment of inspiration like the kid in the video and concentrate on just one sport, what would I turn out to be?

Probably a really lousy 3rd string substitute in a company futsal team or something, who knows?

Oh well, at least I still get to eat all these food and not put on much weight from this current life style. Best!

KY eats – Penang Laksa and Hokkien Mee at SEA Park, PJ

I’ve been a fan of Penang Hokkien Mee (commonly referred to as Prawn Mee in KL) ever since I was able to get to choose my own breakfast, it also means that my affinity towards this particular dish started longer than some of you have been alive, which might not exactly be a very proud talking point, but lets not digress.

I’ve known the existence of this particular hawker stall at seapark for quite a while but somehow never gave it a try until very recently. This was partly due to the fact that a particular ex housemate said the laksa was not very good, and that I didn’t know they serve Hokkien mee too.

Actually we ended up at the stall due to the fact that Soo Kee across the road ran out of steamed chicken as we arrived too late. While settling down to our table, I over heard the owners speaking in Penang Hokkien, a definite good sign.

Rachel ordered asam laksa, while Horng and I asked for the Hokkien mee. The place was cozy despite the afternoon heat, and the whole mobile hawker set up gives it a feeling that is very close to home.

Rachel’s verdict for the laksa was actually quite positive. Here’s what she said about it, and I quote:

    Rachying says (11:21 AM):
erm actualy it somehow satisfy my crave for laksa back home?
just if i can have more fish
    that would be awesome
cos the soup will be thicker

As for the Hokkien mee, I really liked it a lot. All the usual ingredients and the slightly larger than usual prawns in a soup base that has the right prawn taste to it. Very proper and very delicious, I love it. This would be the 3rd Hokkien mee place around the area that I approve. The other two being Yon Lee at TTDI and the stall at Kampung Chempaka.

RM 4 for a bowl of that Penang flavor right here in the heart of PJ, I’m going to be a frequent customer. This stall opens from brunch till tea time. You can also find pretty awesome teow chew porridge just right opposite the stall, and there’s this very nice nasi lemak with ayam goreng at night at the same place too.

    Hey U Hey U!

“Hey U” is the title of a song by Avril Lavigne, who was featured in some of Blink 182′s music videos on youtube (originality questionable). And coincidentally, the U Mobile starter pack I got myself today has a phone number that also ends with 182.

To make things even more auspicious (as Chinese New Year is looming), the 018 number was obtained together with Mellissa, who was born on 8-8-88.

A 018 number that ends with 182 with a girl who was born on 8.8.88. Can’t exactly ask for more can you?

    U Mobile

I’m sure by now some of you must have heard about the new cellphone network provider in town, U Mobile, with the tag line that goes “You call the shots!”. Which basically means wantedU Mobile will empower you with choices. You now get to decide what you want and how you want to communicate with your friends and family. You have freedom of choice with U Mobile.

    • 0 ringgit for a starter pack
    • 1 second billing (no more paying in blocks)
    • 8 sen per SMS to all network
    • No access fee
    • Same price voice or 3g video call (0.8 sen/s)

Pretty nice deal for prepaid I’ll say, and they have pretty sweet deals for postpaid customers too with their U38, U68, and U98 plans.

Furthermore, they have their unlimited 3g data package for only RM68 per month! That’s quite a lot cheaper than the other providers. I know, I use it and I am seriously considering switching after I give U Mobile a good test run since we can now switch network while retaining our numbers.

    U Mobile

If you too are fedup with your provider and want to give U Mobile a try, there is good news!

Come up with a sensible sms (usual short forms accepted, and limit to 160 characters) with the most number of the letter U used, and three winners will get:

    • U Mobile 018 Prepaid Starter Pack
    • U Mobile 018 Prepaid Top Up Voucher Worth RM50
    • U Mobile Goody Bag

Good deal right? Lets make it happen already! (Shhh, but you can also use the new number for prank calls after winning it)

KY eats – SOMO Mont Kiara

Remember at the post on Guinness Gastronomy Workshop with Chef in Black Emmanual Stroobant, I suggested that Western food places should look into adopting some Guinness inspired dishes? Well, about a month back I had some Guinness dishes, but instead of Western, it was something of an opposite: Japanese food at SOMO Mont Kiara.

    Somo Mont Kiara
SOMO mont kiara, dinner for two

I went to SOMO with the infamous Cindy, who happened to stay around the area.

The restaurant is basically fully alfresco with a smallish set up, a dozen or so tables under a retractable canvas. The ambiance is pretty comfortable and actually a bit unique as far as Japanese outlets go: outdoor, a bar, LCD tv player sports, and music.

    Somo Mont Kiara
    two Guinness inspired dishes

The Guinness inspired dishes were not actually on the menu, so I spoke with the friendly manager and requested for them. The grilled beef set and seafood set was suggested, and I also ordered sashimi for two, shisamo (grilled pregnant fish), and a pint of Guinness as good measures.

SOMO was not among the restaurants that ran the Guinness-infused Christmas main course promotion like these below. However, like many restaurants, you can sometimes get the chef to cook up something different, if only you ask nicely.

    Somo Mont Kiara
the girl, the sashimi, the seafood, and the soup & chawanmushi

The chef did probably take slightly longer than usual to prepare the dishes. While it was tough to find the hint of Guinness from the grilled seafood Cindy ordered, the beef I had was excellent. The slight bitterness contributed by the black beer was clearly present in the meat and actually adds character to the otherwise sweetish dish. It was really good, I think SOMO should consider making this dish a permanent fixture on their menu.

The sashimi for two consists of squid, sweet shrimps, octopus, tuna, salmon, and a generous portion of salmon roe. They were fresh, served on ice, and made for very good appetizer. The grilled shisamo too was done properly even as first time eater of the fish, the girl said it was good. And of course, the Guinness drought was excellent.

SOMO is a stone’s throw away from Plaza Mont Kiara

The sets also come with miso soup and chawanmushi, they are priced at RM 35 and RM 45,  sashimi was RM 60. Together with drinks and shisamo, the dinner came to just a little over RM 200. It was very satisfying though, good food, great atmosphere, and of course, a very good company.
