I have been a fan of roasted duck for the longest time and usually get my fix at Loong Foong in Taman Paramount whenever temptations got the better of me. While roasted duck is all good, everyone has been telling me that roasted goose is a whole other level altogether when it comes to taste, people like Horng who has been to HK on numerous occasions. As you might have guessed, roasted goose is a rather common dish there.

glorious glistering roasted goose

However, some weird cosmic arrangement has resulted in the relative scarcity of this dish back in Malaysia. They are so rare that so far I am only aware that less than handful of places offer them around KL.

It wasn’t until late last year that I got myself a taste of this Chinese/HK delicacy at a food review session on Canton-i, and I can attest to the claims. Roasted goose is really quite a bit more succulent and juicy compared to duck, not to mention the relative larger portion which makes it easier to eat too.

Since that event, I had been back to Canton-i a couple times only to find out that the roasted goose is sold out every time I get there. Something had to be done, and I vaguely recalled the availability of this dish at Jalan Pasar.

A few clicks on google and a short drive later, a couple colleagues and I arrived at Soon Fatt Beijing Roasted Goose at Jalan Pasar on one fateful Friday afternoon.

Soon Fatt Roasted Goose at Jalan Pasar

For the three of us, we ordered quarter portion of roasted goose (thigh and drumstick portion), another generous portion of char siu (bbq pork) and siu yoke (roasted pork) on the side, three rice and some drinks.

The dishes came with 3 types of condiments: a plum sauce and 2 types of chili sauce. Soup is served with rice as well.

The portion of roasted goose was actually rather big even for 3 of us. The meat juicy and very scrumptious, which leaves me wondering the differences the breast portion would bring since duck breast and duck confit do carry different taste. While the siu yok wasn’t as impressive as Wong Meng Kei, they still tasted pretty good. The char siu though, was actually better than expected, on par with some of the bests in town (such as meng kee at pudu, or Aman Suria’s famous Hakka noodle char siu)

It was a satisfying lunch but also one that came with a pretty steep price. The meal was some RM70 for three of us, still, RM 20+ per person isn’t too exuberant for something you don’t get very often. Now if only this place has air conditioning…

Tried before and found that abit diffent from duck. I don’t take duck cause I don’t like the yucky smell of duck. At least goose doesn’t have the yucky smell compare to duck! haha…

But I still don’t eat it so much as I still prefer the “siew yuk (roaster pork)! blek 😛

p/s: The God can eat the whole goose… include the brain too! lol… like what he did for duck!

can’t remember the restaurant’s name right now but it’s right next to a tyre shop facing the main road. 😀

    Hey KY,
Great write up on the roasted goose article! Again, not only your food blog is always informative, it is also very entertaining and a pleasure to read.

Chinese BBQ it is always a Cantonese delicacy that HK is famous for. The level exquisiteness of Chinese BBQ in HK is almost equivalent to Prawn Noodle in Penang – it is commonly found in almost every store and majority of them are good.

With the popularity of HK BBQ Noodle shop (such as Canton-i you mentioned in the article) being introduced to KL city 20+ years ago, the Chinese in KL has done a decent job in perfecting the art of Chinese BBQ over the years that almost comparable to that in HK. Taking roasted duck for instant, there were only limited number of places 20+ years ago in KL and vicinity areas that serve good roasted duck with such level of perfect roasting (not counting those emerging HK BBQ Noodle shop then which charged you a premium on their dishes) , now it is almost common thing.

Roasted goose, of course, is still not a common thing to find in KL. But the technique of preparing a roasted duck is almost the same of preparing a roasted duck, if you know what I mean…So if there can be delicious roasted duck in KL areas, I am sure the roasted goose there won’t be far behind.

If you are into the thigh, do you know the left thigh of the roasted goose always taste better than the right? 🙂

Talking about roasted duck, I just read your blog about Sunrise in Seapark. That place has always been my favorite for ducks before I left for the States and still is today. I visited the place couple years ago when I went home. The food (duck) is still good and still as packed during lunchtime like it was back then 17+ years ago. I also saw you mentioned about Loong Foong at Taman Paramount in the same blow. Hmmmm… now that really makes me droil to try out Loong Foong…. Ha ha ha… maybe on my next trip home.

One unrelated question for you: from what I gathered from your blog, you live pretty near to Brickfields area right? If so how come you don’t blog about Woo Lan at Brickfields?

    http://www.awhiffoflemongrass.com/?p=56

It was once my favorite place for good eats, all the way back then when they were still operating off a household in front of a church. I would like to read about your take on this place. 🙂

    Ciao!^_^

Chen – I believe “ngor cheung” you are refering to is not “Phoenix Claws” if I understand the Cantonese term correctly. I think “ngor cheung” is goose intestine in Cantonese and “Phoenix Claws” is chicken claws or “Feng Zao” in Cantonese.:-P

Hear a lot of roast on HK series ,but I never really try it before . One of the most popular roasted goose is 镛记烧腊,even people there called it 飞天烧鹅 .
In your mind, how is the difference of the roasted duck and roasted goose ?
