On most “by invitation” food review sessions, there are PR representatives or the restaurant owner joining myself and other reviewers. Most often than not, the conversation will initially revolves around the food they serve, their restaurant, the company; but eventually to food in general and ended up with information exchange on the best food secrets in town.

The same thing transpired on the review at Dragon-i Pavilion. The PR couple Mr & Mrs Kong claimed to be the pickiest wan tan mee eater this side of Klang Valley, I told them I thought the wan tan mee at restuarant OK, SS2 is pretty good, while their recommendation was this place at Hock Lim kopitiam, PJ State.

this kopitiam doens’t even have a banner

The very same weekend after the review, Kong sms-ed me and said the wan tan mee I recommended was not up to their standard. It was then I decided that I must try this place, so Rachel and I went over to PJ State on Merdeka Day for breakfast.

ohhh, glorious char siu and wan tan mee

We ordered two medium plates of wan tan mee with the standard ingredients: char siu (bbq pork) and wan tan (dumplings).

It took a while for the noodle to be served, as the stall was apparently the busiest among the lot. However, true to Kong’s recommendation, it was really very good. The noodle with just the right amount of sauce, the pork wan tan with very soft smooth skin giving it a very nice texture and taste. Best of all, the char siu was really excellent, complimenting the noodle perfectly.

You can see how we appreciated it from the empty plates at the end of the meal.

  5. Try this place for wantan mee : BBQ Restaurant, 85, Jalan Ipoh, 51200 KL. Next to Ambank, along the same row as Damai Service Hospital. The noodles are really good.

  16. nice….. can’t even remember when was the last time i had wan tan mee…

    hungry~

  17. Try the wantan mee stall next to the Sea Park Market. Only opens at night. Can’t miss it, tables mostly full. It’s the other side of the Sea Park market, the quieter side. Not the side where the Bak Kut Teh stall and the famous Nasi Lemak mamak stall is.

  18. KY, for water conservation purpose.. u can lick yourself dry n then go home n just sleep….

  19. should you tapau the wantan mee (hock lims) it doesnt stick togather.. thats the beauty of it…

    mmmm……

  23. truely tasty lar! me will go and have a plate very soon!

  24. Precious Pea

I remember this place. I went there for breakfast before Hubby and I went to ROM to submit our form! HAHAHA!

  25. sigh..i wonder when i can bring u to my uncle’s stall to try..

  26. This is one of the best if not the best wan tan mee in PJ. They have been in the business for many many years already, if you frequent PJ State, they used to be in the other corner coffee shop beside the cinema. They shifter over in 2003 if I’m not mistaken.

What I like about that wan tan mee is the mee texture. The noodles are almost perfect! I hate noodles that are too soft. However, this noodle is not too hard either. It is just nice with the chewy, springy sensation! Heavenly! Indeed the most important ingredient is the mee.

Everytime I go, my order would be a char siew + pak kai noodles.

I give 9/10 for this stall. They lost the 1 point due to the lansi-ness of the owner especially the wife.

Other than that, it is good! Hahaha.. Looks like I’m doing another food survey as well. LOL!

  27. Damn that looks good. Even if the country is shit at the moment, I will DEFINITELY come back to Malaysia JUST for the food. OMG wantannn meeee….i wanttttt. Is the Sg.Besi one still any good? Ages since I had it.

  28. Big Boys Oven,
    Do it! 😀

    Precious Pea,
OoO, ROM? That meant Read Only Memory to me. :/

    Yatz,
    Jom! Bila? 😛

    sapsapsui,
Hahah lucky I didn’t need to deal with any lansi-ness 😀

    whimsicaljottings,
Haha, come back! After all it’s still our country. 🙂

  29. i miss wan tan mee!! i think i even dreamt about it. haha. can’t wait to go back.

  30. i miss wantan mee 🙁

  31. Oh i came her through Cheesie’s Cheeseroll! Very awesome blog! DROOL. lolol

  32. Sheryl,
    Come back quick! 😀

    Margie,
    Come back quick too! 😛

    Cheesie,
    So cheesie!

  33. The wantan mee that i crave very much is one of the shops at Pulau Tikus Market, Penang, they put some mushrooms and groovy on top of the wantan mee. It is super delicious… hmmm, i miss wantan mee in Penang 🙁

  34. Glad you like it, KY! The darndest thing is that now the wait at Hock Lim will be longer than ever!

  35. Renka,
Ahhh, I usually find wantan mee in Penang not very good though. Must try this one when I go there again. 🙂

    W K Kong,
Ah well, any other recommendations? 😛

  36. Yes, the wan tan mee here is definitely one of the best in Pj /KL but once in a while the standard is not up to the mark. I have been patronising this stall for more than 30 years.

  37. By the way other good wan tan mee stalls are :
    1) in section 17, PJ where one has to wait for about half an hour. Operates from about 8.30 am and by 10.30 am sold out
    2) the one in Taman Yulek, Cheras

  38. Ryan,
OOo thanks! I’ll have to find out where in section 17 that is then..

  39. Agree with Ryan on Taman Yulek, Cheras. Corner coffee shop. The char siew are very generous chunks, not slices. The lady and her husband make their own and can afford to give plenty. Very caramelised!

  40. W K Kong,
    Sounds good!

  41. […] Char Siu could be a little thin, and while better tasting than most places, it falls short of hock lim at PJ State as far as char siu in wan tan mee […]

  42. PJState Kaki

    This Wantan Mee damn expensive….

Honestly, i don’t think any special at all..

  43. PJState Kaki,
didn’t think it was expensive tho..

  44. I have been eating this and only wantan mee at state pj for as long as I know but they have moved, anyone where they moved to? they r simply the best

  45. KY!

    Any luck finding this place?
