Right after the awesome Nuffnang pajama party, myself and the Suan rushed to attend Sunburst KL 2008 at the Hartamas equestrian club. I was supposed to get a chance for a photo session with Incubus thanks to the invitation from Tuborg, but due to the delay of the bidding game at the Nuffnang party (which I won a camera!), I missed the chance by 15 minutes, dang it!
There’s a few more photos on my flickr set.

Incubus rocking the field
Actually, Suan and I attended the cocktail party for Sunburst the night prior as well. There were plenty of booze and finger foods at that event hosted at Ritz Carlton hotel. Quite a few famous people were at the scene, as with many of the Sunburst artists too. However, I did not get the go-ahead with bringing the big camera, so no pictures from there.
2 of the local artists who played at the cocktail party: Reza Salleh and Yuna were very impressive though!

giant screens and huge number of crowd
On Saturday night itself, despite arriving pretty late, we somehow managed to find a parking spot rather close to the main entrance. I do think that the place is set up quite nicely, with many giant projection and LCD screens benefiting those who didn’t manage to squeeze to the front rows. Beer and food counters were set up at many locations, as with the ever important toilets.

the Tuborg square with cold beer and live screens inside
John Legend was performing as we got there, and then of course, the main act, Incubus. They were really good and the atmosphere were totally changed when they came on. The crowd at the main stage swelled up to a huge number. I’d be dancing even more if I wasn’t so tired from whole night of partying, but it was good nonetheless.

Siao Ling from Tuborg who invited me to the party
Before leaving the show, we met up with Siao Ling and Chui Hoon who invited us to the party and had a cold Tuborg (Thanks for inviting!). Chui Hoon was also the one who was responsible for the 3 crates of beer during the last x’mas eve party. (It was nice meeting you!)

KY, Suan, and Chui Hoon (Siao Ling’s boss)
We left the party at around 2:30 and went to the 24-hour KFC (near University Malaya) for a quick meal before heading back for some well deserved sleep. It was a busy but very fun Saturday night.
I went to the Nuffnang Pajama Party last weekend and walked away with a Panasonic Lumix digital camera, what a sweet deal! I have to thank those who lost to me in thumb wrestling and scissor paper stone games, and also to a few who donated me (FA, Darren, johnny ong, skyler, and more) their stash as well!
Before I go any further, there are also more photos on my flickr set and the facebook album.

yeay I won the Panasonic Lumix FS3 camera!
Suan and I reached Borneo Baruk just shy of 7pm, and already there was quite a number of people. I made my round on the floor and met quite a few fellow bloggers. At this kind of event, there are always so many familiar faces whose names (or blog nicks) I struggle to recall, but it was nice meeting all of you!

bloggers can also party
The party was stuffed with fun and games, and a lot of random socializing in between. There was the thumb wrestling/paper scissor hand games that you bet with “nuffnang cash”, and that was how I won one of the three Panasonic Lumix cameras. Others won plugs from xiaxue and kenny, and there was a guy who forgo a camera for a kiss from Dawn Yang. I guess everyone has their own priority.

you gotta love David Lian’s outfit, he won a Wii!
Of all the party goers, I gotta salute David Lian for wearing his utterly ridiculous “pajama” made our of Chipster packets. He won a Nintendo Wii doing that, so it was all worth it. His wife must be very proud.

the Malaysian Dreamgirls were at the party too
The Malaysian Dreamgirls, including our very own Ringo made an unannounced appearance half way through the party. They too joined in and played some games on the stage where more prizes were given out.

FA loves to camwhore
There were a lot of camwhoring people last Saturday night, and FA took her opportunity to snap a few shots with the very fake policewoman and the French maid. Sailormoon and the nurse were prowling the floor.

salute to Su Ann and all the nuffies who made this happen
In all it was a great party, and I got to salute all the Nuffies for making this happen. It was great finally having the chance to meet some of the fellow bloggers too.

and I thought you’d love this picture
Lets make it even bigger next year!
Last week Kerol came over and suggested that we should try the Sango Japanese Restaurant at Crystal Crown hotel as her colleague insisted that it is one of the bests around the area. Coincidentally, Jack appeared at the gate right at dinner time, so three of us went to this little known restaurant to validate the claims of Kerol’s colleague.

38++ for all the teriyaki you can eat. Look at Kerol & Jack so happy!
I am a raw fish lover, my order at Japanese restaurants includes sashimi or sushi every 9 out of 10 times. However, as we were browsing the menu, we couldn’t help but be intrigued by the current offer – “Yakitori Tabe Hodai” (eat as much as you can) at RM 38++ that even includes a beer or juice. The offer includes all sorts of food on skewer, so we made the choice to skip raw fish for this round and took the offer (only valid till 15th April 2008). It was a wise choice.

we had more than 18 types of food on skewer
From the 24 items on the menu, we tried probably around 20 of them (the pictures already show 18.) Most of the items were very delicious, I love the ginkgo nuts, lightly salted and skewered. Then there’s chicken with leek, with wasabi, chicken wing, and even chicken skin! So many choices you wish you have a bigger stomach.

special meat ball – top left
If the chicken dishes were good, items involving beef were even better. the asparagus wrapped with beef was very delightful, but the absolute must-order item would be the “special meat ball”. The description could be better, it looked like an ice cream stick with beef instead of ice cream, and a raw quail’s egg accompanying the meat, very rich and yet very addictive. I need to have that again!

Crystal Crown is just a couple minutes off Federal Highway
Other than meat items, there are also skewed non-animal products. Mushroom, okra (lady fingers), ginkgo nuts, garlic, egg plants, and so forth. If you’re the more adventurous type, you can go for chicken liver, heart, or gizzards too.
Remember, the offer ends at 15th April, I think I need to go back there again soon.

A couple weeks ago three of us went to the much blogged Indonesian food outlet Waroeng Penyet at the Curve. For those who can’t read the Indonesian (or Malay) language, waroeng (or warong) is a traditional hut, while penyet translates to flattened. So I guess you can call it a flattened hut though the place doesn’t look exactly like a hut nor is it flattened.

no frill fast food outlet setting
As their logo suggests, the signature dish at this outlet would be the ayam penyet (flattened chicken). We ordered 2 servings of that, a bawal bakar (black pomphret), udang penyet (flattened prawn), pete udang belado (prawn with petai), and a sayur asem (vegetable soup). Of course, we were not able to deny the temptation of the curious soda gembira (happy soda).
Just like Carl’s Jr., you get a number after you order, and the food is served to the table fresh and steaming.

how do you like the soda gembira?
The chicken were absolutely stunning. Crispy on the outside and still juicy on the inside. The sambal was very flavorful, with the taste of fresh chili and a slight tangy sensation, it compliments all sorts of meat nicely. The prawn and pomphret were equally good as well. The soup though, it something I wouldn’t order again, it was a bit weird to me with the slightly sourly taste that is everything wrong between tomyam and chicken soup. I guess it might be an acquired taste… but perhaps not for me.
These dishes were served with rice, so you do get a proper traditional meal in a modern setting.

flavorful, spicy, and absolutely delicious
If I remember correctly, each dishes were priced just under RM 10. The excellent sambal (3 types actually) can be refilled at will, and I will definitely go there again. Give it a try if you are one of those who love spicy flavorful food!
Waroeng Penyet is situated on the first floor near the bridge connecting Ikano Power Center to the Curve.

I was invited to an exclusive Guinness St. Patrick’s day Food Creation event at Nikko Hotel last Thursday thanks to Celine. All I knew about this event was that I get to sample a Guinness infused food, I was quite intrigued, as the only type of Guinness infused food I’ve ever had was Guinness pork ribs served by many Chinese tai chau places.

Guinness infused Lamb Shank
For the uninitiated, St. Patrick’s Day is an annual feast day which celebrate the patron saint of Ireland. It is traditionally observed on the 17th of March every year. Since this is a celebration of food and drinks, and Guinness is from Ireland, they came up with this Guinness infused Food Creation contest that runs until the end of the month. There are 9 outlets participating in this contest judged by celebrity Chef Emmanuel Stroobant of Chef in Black. The results will be out on the 25th of March.

chatting up with Chef Halil
This particular food tasting event was held at Bentley’s pub on first floor, a very cozy English pub setting with classy deco that seems so fitting for this occasion. I was greeted by Azira, the communication person at Nikko (who incidentally worked at the same place I am working now), the resident manager Ron Brooks, and of course, the very friendly Chef Halil. Besides all sorts of drinks (alcoholic or otherwise), they serve dishes such as fish and chips, steak, shepherd’s pie and so forth. However, until the 30th of March, the special addition to the menu is the Guinness Braised Lamb Shank on Sauteed Arrow Root Chips with Onion Jam, the very dish that is the competition. Best thing is, I get to eat it!

Christian from KL Lifestyle and Celine enjoying their lamb shank
As we were waiting for the lamb shank, chef Halil explained to me how the dish is cooked. First marinated with salt and pepper, the lamb shank is browned with vegetable oil on a flat pan. Then came the celery, carrots and onion, and then garlic cloves, tomato paste, then a whole bottle of Guinness stout. After that there’s the brown sauce and so forth. 1 hour and 15 minutes later, the dish is done. (I actually have the recipe from this friendly chef, but I guess I am in not hurry to try this myself just yet).
The lamb shank was very tasty and very tender, with a very subtle hint of bitterness from the stout but masterfully balanced with the sweetness of onion jam. The use of arrow root (ngaku) and other vegetables compliments the texture and taste of the lamb. It was very gastronomically satisfying, I think it’s a winner! Naturally, I had the lamb with a glass of Guinness Draught.

I just had to have a glass of this!
To try this dish, you have until the end of this month. It is available at RM 30++ at Bentley’s pub, Nikko Hotel (just right next to Citybank at Ampang Park).
