I have wanted to try Carl’s Jr. ever since it was reopened in Malaysia last year, but for one reason or another, I didn’t manage to try it until just a couple of days ago when my colleagues suggested that we should have lunch at the joint at Sunway Pyramid. When I saw the tag line on one of it’s posters saying “Screw the Diet“, I started to like the place already.
Think of Carl’s Jr. sitting in between Chilis/TGI and Burger King/McD. While it is set up as a fast food joint, the quality is far above BK & McD, and priced accordingly too.

unlimited refill of drinks (including ice lemon tea, coffee) and pickles/onion
Being my first time there, I didn’t really know what to order. I had wanted to get the Portebello Mushroom Burger but they ran out of stock, so I naively followed my colleague and ordered myself a medium size SuperStar double combination, or something like that.
I got my cup and filled it up with some coke while waiting for the burger to be served. The one thing I like about Carl’s Jr. is the fact that other than soft drinks, they have unlimited free refill for coffee, ice lemon tea, pickles, onions, and even slices of lemon.

it was a big meal
When the burger came, the size of it makes the Whopper look like a White Castle sandwich. The taste was actually rather good as well, the two charbroiled beef patties were juicy and tasty. While I prefer the real bacon, this halal version did not disappoint either. I actually had to waste more than half of the fries as my stomach was totally stuffed up after finishing the awesome burger.
While the price is a little high at RM 10+ to RM 20+, I think the size and taste factor do make up for it. I’m going to get the Portebello Mushroom Burger next time!
You can find Carl’s Jr. in Sunway Pyramid (new wing), Mid Valley, 1-Utama (old wing), and Pavilion KL. I’ve heard that they’re going to open 40 outlets between Singapore and Malaysia, can’t wait!

YEAY! I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE TO LIKE IT!!! YEAY YEAY ADA KAWAN!
Try the first one! famour star or something – cheapest on the menu. Nothing fancy, just normal beef burger. But after that, you’ll never want another Burger King or Mcdonald’s burger EVER again.
Portobello, some might find it a tad too salty and Guacomle is a bit pungent for me.
Their sets are too big man. Usually for 2 ppl, one order the SMALL set and the other JUST THE SANDWICH then share the fries and drink – more than enough! Gor me, at least.
SHIT I HAVE TO BLOG ABOUT THISS!~
I want a carl’s junior burger now.
I hate you!
By davidlian on Jan 11, 2008 | Reply
Lol! I had the Chilli Cheese and then the RM 25 burger (the most expensive on their menu lah). I thought it was mmmkay, but for 50 bucks, I think you can do better at multiple other places.
Like my friend said: Carls Jr is a place you’ll eat once then never eat again. It’ll be a good experience, but just not the sort you need multiple times.

I tried the six dollar burger in the US and it was good, but personally I think Carls Jr. is a bit overrated here (not to mention overpriced). In America the prices are almost the same as McD’s…wonder why they cost so much in Malaysia.

I had one of their chicken set in medium size…costs about RM23? Gosh, I ended up tapao-ed half of the burger back home… @_@ The burger I had was so tasty, all of the ingredients packed in one burger were oh-so-delicious!

They finally have it here, but after going through a few of their different burgers, I think that their Singapore branches serve a tastier produce. Same burgers, but they just taste better.
Hell, any of the fast-food joints in SG, their food tastes better compared to their MY counter-parts.

Typo on my last comment.

hi, have been reading ur blog for some time but never commented as not necessary. But thanks for this post. I have often wondered why the younger generation likes to eat macD and hamburger places when they have such lovely local foods like cha kuey teoh, and laksa, etc. fr ur blog i can see u guys want meat. so much so that u are willing to pay 3-5 times the local Rm4 to get it. Meat is so important to u lot. Just like in the west. It is understandable that the west wants meat, because it is cold here, but why msians want to eat so much meat? it is hot in msia, and u dont need those protein and fat for generating heat. Maybe the taste of meat is so overpoweringly good. haha. I like meat myself, though when I am in malaysia I prefer eating the local foods rather than hamburger. People in UK are lapping up MacD etc, too though here in the west, MacD etc are considered cheap places to eat, rather than the top end in malaysia. The beef in ur hamburgers may be quite good quality beef. In UK, anything can be used to make mince beef. we have no carl jr here in UK.

fox,
you just miss singapore, don’t you? hehe
Bob,
hahaha, I think you’re slightly overreacting.
anthony wong,
For me, it’s just the variety of food that I treasure most, not necessary just meat or char kueh teow, but all sorts of different food.
By Simon Seow on Jan 15, 2008 | Reply
I haven’t try it yet. I tried once like 15 years ago. I misses Grandy’s. Those Cinnamon rolls are just awesome.
By enochho on Feb 5, 2008 | Reply
yeah the portobello mushroom burger is amazing. make it a double portobello mushroom for ultimate bliss
you won’t need food for the rest of the day after that ;p

Simon Seow,
Go have it then!
enochho,
OooO, I shall try it soon!

Went to Carl’s Jr. When I first saw the price, my eyeballs almost come out. Can’t believe they actually converted US Dollar to Malaysian Ringgi. I mean ya, the burger was fantastic with those grilled stuff, but for that price, I wouldn’t want to visit again for a place which actually serving Fast Food.
It’s just a fancy and high end fast food. For that price range, I don’t think they are going to survive for a long time.
By KY on Apr 15, 2008 | Reply
Gummie,
On the contrary, I think they will. The price is quite a bit more expensive but you do get huge portions and higher quality food. People with huge appetite will appreciate it.

i had the biggest one after gym…it was a great meal! great fries! making the ice lemon tea was a bit tough though. better get coke.i always look forward to BIG burgers as the Mc D is very undersized and Chillis sometimes still look small. hahaha
By KY on Jul 18, 2008 | Reply
gasoline,
Yah I agree, very satisfying.
By bondgirl on Jul 22, 2008 | Reply
i agree with deriku. carl’s jr is overrated and so overpriced. sure, its bigger than other fast food burgers, but it’s STILL a fast food joint. u still have to queue for ur food. why pay so much more when you can get the same thick burgers at chili’s/TGIF/dome AND get some service as well at the same price?
By KY on Jul 22, 2008 | Reply
bondgirl,
Oo I guess it’s a matter of taste and choice. Personally I actually like Jarrod & Rowlins more, but that’s a non halal selection though.
