KY eats - Bermuda & Onion at Changkat Bukit Bintang

A couple weeks ago baby Marco’s father invited me to have a food tasting session at this curiously named Bermuda and Onion at Cangkat Bukit Bintang. Since I was bringing a couple guests, he reminded me that this place serves pork, more pork, and nothing but pork! My drool started flowing just from hearing that magic sentence.

During the weekend, parking around the area was surprisingly easy to find. We were greeted by this absolutely beautiful interior decoration the moment we stepped into the restaurant, the lime green wall, egg shaped lamp on the curvy ceiling fan, the patio, the bar, the chairs; this place looks like something out of a romantic movie, a striking contrast from the nearby Jalan Alor kopitiams.

As 2 of my buddies and I waited for TBG and her lesser half, we were served some bruschetta with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to start the day off. Very nice.

Then the pork dishes began, in a small way at first. Out of the three skewers we had, two of them had pork in it. The prawns and parma ham was absolutely fantastic, the asparagus and bacon was equally delicious with it’s contrasting texture and taste of vegetable vs meat. Ladies fingers and tomato gave a pretty good balance to counter the meat just a little. It was a very good start, and I was quite impressed already.

To warm up our stomach further before the main dishes, we were presented three other appetizers: cold cuts, caesar salad, and prosciutto and melone.

The cold cuts came with three different types of meat with some olives. I love two of them but find the harder type a little bit too much to handle with it’s dryness and more pungent smell (purists would love it though). Caesar salad came with plenty of prawns, bacon, Parmesan cheese and egg. It was very refreshing and delicious!

However, my favorite of the day has to go to the prosciutto and melone. I never knew parma ham could go so well with rock melon, the saltiness of the meat and the sweetness of the rock melon was absolutely brilliant! You must order this when you go to Bermuda and Onion, do not forget this!

Then came assault of main dishes. The wild boar fettuccine was pretty strong tasting, with generous chunks of wild boar meat and mushroom cooked with fresh herbs. The speck ‘canedarli’ gnocchi is a homemade Italian bread dumpling served in double boiled chicken broth and Parmesan cheese. The chef explained that they’d have made this bigger in Italy as compared to here.

Then of course, there’s the pork chop ala mustard that came in a huge plate. A generous slab of pork chop is pan seared, and served with creamy Dijon mustard sauce and plenty of mash potato. Very rich and creamy but really good.

Just as we thought the lunch session is coming to an end, two glorious dishes appeared. The interesting looking sea bass and roasted pork belly.

The sea bass, as with most dishes from this restaurant, didn’t escape the influence of pork. Mantled with parma ham and served with mixed sauteed vegetables, it gives you a false sense of enjoying “healthy” seafood but of course, with a more satisfying experience through the taste buds.

As for the pork belly, what can I say? Proper and glorious layers of pork skin, fat, and meat served in a thick brown sauce with mashed potato and Lardoni bacon, I can’t help myself but to continue slicing it up and chew em down despite already being very full.

We capped the day with a hot cup of cafe latte, it was definitely the best lunch I’ve had in a long while. Chef Max and restaurant manager Sharmini were very friendly, as with baby Marco’s parents as well.

Price wise, I’d think this place is pretty reasonable. The skewers are RM 8-9, my favorite parma ham with melon at RM33, other main dishes are priced at around 30+ to 50+. Give it a try!

KY Challenges Boss Stewie to FlipFlop Flippy fishing game

Nuffnang is doing it again, and instead of just a usual movie screening (Made of Honour), this time it is something that really entices me, a movie screening with 8 course meal at JW Marriott! I am salivating just thinking of it, slurps!

I don’t care if I have to wear formal monkey suit, black shoes, or an evening gown, I just have to get my invitation to this event on 12th June, I can’t wait, I can’t wait!

Actually I was already playing this FlipFlop Flippy game from Hong Leong Bank when it was first launch, the thing is actually damn addictive. (goddamn electric eel!) So when I saw the email from Nuffnang, I know I should be able to do good enough to qualify. I tried it again and scored myself a respected 12750 grade “A” result!

Then I saw Tim online, and I figured I’ll challenge him on this, the dude was, as usual, way too overconfident and take on my Char Kueh Teow bet in an instant!

KY eats - Teow Chew Porridge at Sun Fatt Kee, PJ Seapark

Teow Chew porridge is always one of the de facto comfort food to me, whenever I have a case of bad stomach or running under the weather, this would be my food of choice. Not overpowering, light yet can be flavorful, and best of all, pretty economical.

The teow chew porridge at Sun Fat Kee kopitiam is one of the more traditional establishments, with quite a variety of choices and steaming hot watery porridge every afternoon.

For a single person, I usually take a cincaru fish (leather jacket, like at Mum’s place) kembong, luncheon meat (spam), and a piece of tofu. At this stall, everything is done right, the kembong is fried/seared with plenty of chili padi and just enough amount of salt. The texture of the fish and it’s saltiness goes very well with the porridge.

Of course, luncheon is always one of my favorite dishes to go with porridge. They deep fried it with a thin layer of egg batter to add to the meat’s flavor as well. Then there’s the tofu to provide another type of texture from the other two dishes. Nice.

The meal costs less than RM5, healthy (to a certain extend) and guarantee to not upset the stomach. If you’re looking for comfort food, this is the one.

KY tv - First Aid & CPR training

What do you do during an emergency? An accident with injured parties laying on the floor, a fire with 3rd degree burn victims, a heart attack case, or when someone chokes trying to swallow a prune. What do you do other than calling the 999 emergency number and yell for help?

I would have done just that prior to the 2-day training on First Aid and CPR last week, but now, Haaaaaaaaaaa! I will be able to help (to a certain extend anyway).

Although I’ve had trainings on CPR more than 3 years ago while obtaining my Safety Offshore Passport for visiting oil and gas platform purposes, this training was much more comprehensive and concentrate more on rescuing others than personal safety alone.

In this training, I met a few celebrities in this field. Ladies and Gentlemen, I want you to meet Little Anne, Baby Anne, and Choking Charlie. These superstars let us blow and pump and whack and push to learn the art of CPR as well as the Heimlich Maneuver to clear the airway in a case of choking.

We also learn about stabilizing bone fractures, stopping excessive bleeding, handling amputation cases, the different degrees in burnt victims and how to calculate the percentage of burnt area in a human body (size of victim’s palm = 1%), treat a person in shock, mobilizing victim with suspected spinal cord injury, and so on. Very informative and rather interesting.

The theory and practical with little Anne and friends were informative, but the highlight of the session came in the second day when we split into 2 groups for the simulation exercise. We were the first group to be the emergency response unit that went to an accident scene. There’s a case of amputation (fake thumb), spinal injury, fracture, and a couple other victims with minor injuries. I managed to find the fake thumb. :D

When it was our turn to be victims, the scenario was slightly more interesting. A scene of carnage with me being the killer. I stabbed a guy with knife straight to the chest, another uncle with internal organ spillage, a few other with heavy wounds and a 3rd degree burnt victim. Check out the video below:

It was a fun and very informative 2 days of training that could prove to be invaluable if and when there is a situation that demands it. I hope I don’t ever have to use the knowledge gained.

KY travels - Chamang Falls, Elephant Sanctuary, and Deer Park

In the spirit of cuti-cuti Malaysia, Suan organized another trip to Chamang Waterfall (N03° 30.56′ E101° 51.47′) near Bentong (plus the Elephant Sanctuary and Deer Park) just a little over a week ago on Labor Day. Nine of us noobs participated in this awesome trip, the participants were Suan, Sammy, Dree, Tock, ST, Kim, Rachel, Kerol, and of course, yours truly. We had a pretty decent dimsum breakfast meal near my house and then started our journey towards Pahang. Our first destination, the Chamang Waterfalls. We arrived in less than 2 hours of driving. Unlike the Chiling Falls we went whereby a 1.5 hour trekking is needed, at Chamang Falls, the car park is situated right beside the river. It took only a few minutes to walk to our “camp site” near the main fall.

We had loads of fun there, the weather was hot but the water was super cold. We eventually found a way to swim and climb up to a somewhat dry platform just below the main fall (see my zen moment photo) and hanged out there for a bit.

Dree, the dude who can swim and smoke, even bought a portable stove and made coffee! Cold water, warm coffee, great view, even better company, it was awesome.

We had to leave the waterfall by around noon as we hoped to get to the Elephant Sanctuary in time to register for the free elephant rides (valid only for some 100 people daily). Though we did arrive there before 1pm, the list was all full as the sanctuary was packed with visitors on this Labor day.

We played with the two baby elephants a bit. They were very playful and still had trouble controlling their trunks and it was very cute. The sanctuary is also a home for many adult elephants, but they are placed on a fenced up area. We hang around the place for a bit, took a few silly pictures, had some ice creams and cold drinks under the hot sun, then proceed to yet another destination - the Deer Park.

The entrance fee for Deer Park was RM 5 per person, and it was totally worth it. The place is more like a petting zoo than a mere sanctuary for deers. We fed the deers with sweet potato, the ostriches with some leaves, had our hands on the spiky (but not sharp) hedgehog, and the very shy (and shivering) sugar glider. Of course, there’s the sun bear with extremely small wiener! It was a very fun place.

We actually headed to the Chamang Falls again after that and had a second session of sun, water, and swim. By the time we got back at PJ it was already dinner time. We had garlic fish and some other dishes at Lucky Loke nearby my house and called it a day after that. It was an excellent trip, we should do this more often!
