For the bak kut teh lovers out there, I am sure most of you have come to expect that the famous Malaysian dish is served in a hot claypot. However, this is not always the norm, in the earlier days of bak kut teh, the dish is often served in individual bowls. Some old folks in Klang still prefer bak kut teh to be served this way.

plastic bowl style no hassle bak kut teh

The Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh was introduced to me by Kenneth, I wouldn’t have found it otherwise since it’s sorta hidden, and old town isn’t exactly a place famous for food, unlike SS2, or Klang.

The biggest difference at this restaurant is the way the bak kut teh is served, the old school bowls, no claypot. Different types of ingredients are served in its own bowl, lean meat, fatty meat, innards, Chinese mushroom, Enokitake mushroom, yau char kuai, and tofu are some of the items you can order. Some of these items come in slightly different broth than the main bak kut teh soup, like the mushroom.

Taste wise, I would rate this place above average. The soup isn’t as great as some of the Klang shops, but overall it is still pretty good. This style of serving though, has it’s advantages, for example, you do not need to go through the whole claypot just to find that last piece of tripe you crave for, and if you do not like lean meat, you can place that bowl nearer to those who love it. As an added advantage, without needing to heat up claypots, the waiting time is reduced too.

The dinner costs us around RM 10 per person, pretty much what you’d expect from a decent bak kut teh meal. Been there a few times and I’d go there again, a nice dinner bak kut teh place around Petaling Jaya. Parking situation is a bit of a PITA tho..

wtf in a plastic bowl. So unhygenic. At least use a porcelain bowl la.

KY: a dirty porcelain bowl is as dirty as a dirty plastic bowl, same goes the clean ones. 😉

but… but… if hot soup pour on plastic, it will release somekind of chemical which causes cancer wor.

KY: that’s more of an urband legend, plastic now can withstand way higher temperature than the boiling point safely.

Yummy! They used to stay just behind my house [back-2-back] and they cook the stuff in their kitchen and not at the shop. I guess its because of the secret ingredient. And my grandma used to pass over a big bowl and ask for RM10 BKT. Then they moved away… 🙁 so gotto go and q-up at the shop..
