KY eats – Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee (建記辣椒板麵)

We have been wanting to try out this place for a while now, but due to the lack of clear direction as to whereabout of this restaurant, we have been putting it off until the sense of adventure creeped up again on one fine afternoon. Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee (建記辣椒板麵) at Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman was worth every bit the trouble it took us to locate the restaurant.

old school place with freshly made noodle

I am usually not a big fan of Pan Mee, having only had this hawker offering not more than half a dozen times in my life. The Pan Mee from Kin Kin, however, is different from usual. The noodle is dry and the soup comes seperatedly, as opposed to the usual noodle soup set up. The noodle too, is the thin type. Other than the familiar anchovies, a boiled egg with half cooked yolk tops up the offering.. *drools*

Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee at Jalan Dewan Sultan Sulaiman
comes with freshly boiled egg with runny yolk, yum!

The claim of fame for Kin Kin Pan Mee though, is the chili paste. You are free to add as much as you can endure with the noodle. The chili paste has been fried before and has a distinct slight burnt taste to it, which mixes pretty well with the noodle. However, you should not be over confident on your chili tolerant and put too much at once lest end up having your lips look like Macy Gray’s.

    look at horng’s burning lips!

Overall the pan mee was very delicious, the egg gives it an overall smooth and pleasant texture, too. You will find yourself trying to lick the bowl. At less than RM5 per bowl, I’d say the price is quite fair too. Give it a try if you are in town!

KY, there is another shop called Yuk Kee. Nice kopi, nice kaya roll and roti babi.

KY: heard that shop isn’t as great, plus, you are supposed to sweat with the chili pan mee right? :P

so u finally tried Kin Kin… well the noodles are good… but quite pricey. wish they came in MahMeen (double portion) size. the portions are too small lah.

meekiee, that shop is called Yut Kee… in Dang Wangi. Roti babi, fried taufu and pork chop should be tried.

    15. ront says:

i think the noodle are a bit on the expensive side…..

each bowl under RM5…..and the quantity in it…..after 1 bowl…feel like you want/need another….especially for me if i have to drive that distance and into the mad traffic there.

but have to agree its good..

Ya. I’ve been there a few years ago. Used to take my car to service in a workshop there until it shifted to Batu Caves. The taste is good but the portion is small when you are paying RM 5 per bowl. Maybe the chili is very expensive to make. But I don’t think many people mind about the price, still fully crowded during lunch time.

    20. [...] In fact, go to KY Speaks for another awesome review and more importantly, a nice little map too! Try it… I think you’ll like it! [...]

    21. [...] So since today is a Friday (meaning 2 hour lunch) and I was thinking of something spicy, together with Nicholas decided to pick up the nuffie Skyler for some Pan Mee in the city. Ordinarily, we would have gone to the famous Kin Kin Pan Mee, but I decided to give Restaurant Super Kitchen just across the road a chance to prove their worth since Kin Kin is always too packed, and I was never too good at tolerating horrible service anyway. Give the underdogs a chance, shouldn’t we? [...]

Hi, i love kin kin pan mee very very much too.. But most of the time, i go for S&S in Bayu Tinggi Klang because it is safe to satisfy everyone’s taste in my family. Instead of only one dish, S&S serves a range of pan mee, in which the noodle itself has different flavours instead of the soup. For instance, they have dragon fruit pan mee, whereby u can expect the mee to be in natural pink colour. Apart from that, they have spinach, seaweed and pumpkin pan mee etc. Then for my sisters who dislikes pan mee, she would usually order other type of food eg curry laksa, spicy mee, kon lo mee, which are equally tasty!! Pan mee lovers, check it out!

    24. Hiya :-) Went here yesterday and loved it. Took some pics but some of the pics didn’t come out. May I use a couple of yours? I will of course, credit you! :-)

    27. KY says:

      agnes sim,
      hahahaha ok

    28. I didn’t get to try Kin Kin chili pan mee, but got to try the dish from Super Kitchen. Even though I am also not a huge pan mee eater, the dish was delicious due to the chili flakes. I would have loved to try chili pan mee at Kin Kin also to compare.

      Migration Mark,
yeah I like super kitchen too!
