KY Party – 2006 Xmas Eve Party Report

This Xmas Eve Party is the third we’ve had after I moved to SS3, and as usual, we had a pretty good night. I had the honor of having some 30 guests to have fun with. For those who came, I hope you enjoyed, and for those who missed out due to travel, sickness or whatever, there’s always the next year.

    The party people:

from da house: KY, Kerol, Huey Fang, Audrey
the bloggers: Val, ST, Suanie, Terence, Galvin, Kim, Kelvin, Nick, Erna
the non bloggers: Damien, Margie, Dree, Lorna, Duncan, Kwan Wai, Chan, Sai Meng, Fox
the new comers: Adrian, Alan, Yoga, Sueter, Ashraf Lee, Simon, Lula, Suanie’s 2 neighbours

disco lights and drinks, the party people with horrid dresses

The Party started at around 9 something, we’ve got the drinks and booze prepared with some junk food. Duncan and Audrey brought some pretty good fried rice and Hokkien mee from Melaka (stuff with lots of pork lard) too. It was chit chats and drinking, and a little bit of dancing going on (only a little bit cos FA the dancing queen was away travelling).

the hot chicks, and the camwhore

By around 10:30 Kerol’s cake was brought out and the birthday girl got a big glass of drinks to gulp down, prepared by Terence. It was one of the better drinks prepared by the dude, the other inventions of this guy were purely horrible mixes of alcohol from different parts of the world.

    it was Kerol’s birthday too!

We started the gift exchange just before midnight. There were a little over two dozen gifts on the floor, each supposedly to be worth around RM 10. Kim got lucky and drew the last number.

    the gift exchange starts

Margie got the first and picked the gift from Lorna. That turned out to be a “hamper” of sort, filled with instant noodle, canned Lai Chee, and some 3-in-1 instant drinks. It’s only fitting that Margie is heading to Australia for study, they don’t sell Soup Tulang Maggie Mee over there I bet. Some other memorable gifts were the goggle and gas mask that Lula picked, a pack of sweets Val selected, and the 5 professional studio photo time that Galvin got from Ashraf.

    the mask, for the haze?

Again, Fox gave an over value gift (an original PC game last year), this time an ergonomic keyboard that the lucky Kelvin picked. Everyone thought that Kim was going to snatch it with her last number, but the noob picked the last gift instead and gotten herself a box of Panadol. I guess it’s good to cure her headache from pondering why she didn’t go for the keyboard instead.

everyone got something cool, and then there’s Kim with the Panadols

Unlike Fox the hero last year, nobody puked this year. Perhaps we grew slightly more matured and responsible for our own body? Nay, I think it was because Cass the hustler was down sick and didn’t come to force everyone to drink. We had an awesome time nonetheless, how was your party?

note: Due to the World Wide Wait phenomena following the tragic earth quake at Southern Taiwan, this post is delayed for several days.

KY eats – Koay Chap (粿汁) at Air Itam, Penang

One of the least appreciated hawker food in Penang is Koay Chap (粿汁), a dish that is not offered at many places in Penang, and so far I have not been able to find any place that sells this in Klang Valley.

the stall is located at Wah Meng kopitiam

One of the most famous Koay Chap stalls is at Air Itam, I remember being introduced to this dish by my parents before the Penang Bridge was built. It seems like the stall is being operated by the younger generation these days.

The dish has a slightly different type of “noodle” that has the characteristics of both pan mee and kueh teow, a sort of thicker kueh teow with different texture (refer to the photo below). Duck meat, innards, coagulated blood, and hard-boiled duck egg makes up the rest of the ingredients. All these are served in a bowl of duck flavored soup that is darkish in color. Thai chili and soya sauce accompanied the dish.

all the good stuff from duck, nothing is wasted

If you are a fan of duck meat and has the nerve to try all the innards and all, this is definitely the dish you should not miss when heading up north. I personally love the taste as well as the uniqueness of this dish. The less adventurous can still order the same dish with only duck meat and the egg.

this stall is just a stone’s throw away from the laksa place

This stall operates in the morning, the same time as the morning wet market. If my memory serves me correct, a bowl goes for RM 2.50 or 3.00.

KY eats – Penang Asam Laksa at Air Itam

One of the must-eat item (especially for females, I don’t know why) in Penang is the Asam Laksa. The most famously stall would be this one at Air Itam, walking distance from the Kek Lok Si temple, by the alley across the morning market.

a walkway packed with hungry people

The place is not particularly hygienic or comfortable, just some tables and the stalls by the busy road, partially exposed to the element. But hey, we’re here for the food anyway.

The Penang Laksa, popularly referred to as Asam Laksa in other parts of the country, comes in a sourish fish (ikan kembung) based soup with thick rice noodle, plenty of shredded pineapple, lettuce, red chili, cucumber, onion, galangal (curry flower), and lemon grass. All these are topped with some mint leaves and the thick shrimp paste with a very distinctive love-it or hate-it smell.

    yumm… *slurps*

Our order was served up in just a few minutes’ time. Simmering hot and oozing with the glorious laksa smell, we attacked the bowl like a vengeance. There were nothing left 5 minutes later. The combination of sour and spicy soup with the fresh produce and the thick rice noodle was perfect. I never waste the soup either, thick with shredded fish, it has a very unique texture and taste that I find very nice.

The smallish bowl of laksa is yours for RM 2.40. I would never recommend this as a main meal due to the sour and spicy nature of the dish, but it does make a nice afternoon snack. This Air Itam stall serves in the afternoon to evening.

KY eats – Satay Celup at Ban Lee Siang, Melaka

Sort of like the laksa of Penang, anyone who goes to Melaka should not miss the uniquely Melaka delicacy, the satay celup (celup: dip). It is basically a type of steamboat on with the raw food on the stick to be cooked in a boiling spicy peanut sauce that is similar to those that comes with normal satay. Other than the different medium for cooking the raw food on stick, it is identical to the more recognizable lok lok.

Satay Celup at Ban Lee Siang, Melaka
this stuff are absolutely mouth watering

For supper during our Melaka trip, we headed to Ban Lee Siang to fill our stomach with this uniquely Melaccan food. Now some of you may suggest that Capitol Satay Celup is the “better” place to go. In a way, while Capitol is one of the “original” and oldest place serving satay celup, there are simply way over-crowded (with people standing right next to your table waiting for you to get done) for anyone to enjoy a peaceful meal there without rushing. My baba friends from Melaka hence suggested this place, which is just as good.

Satay Celup at Ban Lee Siang, Melaka
only 50 sen per stick, pay what you eat

The place was quite packed as well, we managed to get 2 tables right next to each other to fit all 10 of us. We then head straight to the line to get our stuff. At this place, everything is priced at RM 0.50 per stick, no matter if it is prawn, vegetable, fish ball, quail’s egg, cockles, anything. You only pay for what you eat. You can also order some bread too.

Satay Celup at Ban Lee Siang, Melaka
some happy diners (notice Kim, on the left, stained her shirt)

Serving is simple, you just put the stick of raw food in the boiling satay sauce/soup, let it cook, and then put it to your mouth. The stuff packs a punch though, in terms of hotness, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who can’t have spicy food. But if you like spicy food and enjoys lok lok, this is an awesome combination.

After crowning herself with 38 sticks of satay in the afternoon, Kim got the better of us again and devoured almost 30 sticks of satay celup. I only had 2/3 of what she managed, respect.

If you head down to Melaka, do not miss this dish.
