KY eats – Cheap and Good Chinese Food near KLCC

Now many of us have been bitching about how much food in KLCC costs, a plate of mixed rice can set you back at RM 10, and a sugar cane drink goes for RM 2.50. However, if you are willing to walk across the street, there are cheap and frankly, better tasting food just around the corner.

Enter Sweet Home Restaurant at Wisma Sentral. I would actually call this place a kopitiam instead. The shop is on the ground floor facing the parking lot, directly opposite Isetan side entrace. If you walk from KLCC, it is less than 2 minutes under the sun.

    Nice little kopitiam

Other than mixed rice, the shop also serve to order, like any “tai chow” place. The price is very reasonable, usually a single entry goes for only around RM 5.00 or so. We ordered vegetable (yau mak with fu yu), pork knuckle with vinegar, and herbal chicken. With 3.5 plates of rice and 2 chinese tea, it only costs Rm16.50. That’s a very full lunch for 2 person, and cheaper than a burger king set lunch.

Other dishes that are highly recommended are vegetable with roasted pork (choi tam siu yok,) fish with tofu and kang kung belacan. The portion of the dishes isn’t very big, but it is economical, and perfect for lunch. Comparing with other similar places that I dined in, I would rate this above average taste wise, and top of the list budget wise.

Don’t complain about the lack of affordable meal at KLCC. I’ll show you some other cheap and good Malay food stalls nearby some other time.

KY eats – Ampang Yong Tau Foo

I am sure some of you noobs here have heard about Ampang Yong Tau Foo, and might have gone to some shady shops with the “Ampang Yong Tau Foo” signs. However, if you haven’t gone to the original place, all you’ve had would just be akin to any stalls in KL claiming they serve “Penang Char Kuih Teow”. Lets get old school, lets get the real stuff.

    Ampang yong tau foo
    argh, i’m starting to drool..

Now there are 3 shops right next to each other at this original Ampang Yong Tau Foo place that is situated in an old school area with all the pre-war buildings. I have tried each of the 3 shops and thus far think that all of them are pretty much equally good. So these days we just go to the one that we manage to find a parking space.

    Ampang yong tau foo
we ordered quite a feast for 3 people

Last weekend we visited the middle shop, called Restaurant Orchard View Yong Tau Foo. Each piece of yong tau foo is RM 0.60, and they serve a variety of other dishes too. We ordered “mui choi khau yok” (fatty pork with some fermented vege,) glass chicken legs (boneless chicken feet, served with carrots, chillie, parsley, lime,) peanut soup, oily vegetable, and 20 pieces of mouth watering yong tau foo. Terence was there, that explains why we ordered so much.

Some purists will say that the place should sell nothing but yong tau foo, and I think one of the other shops is like that, but I think it doesn’t hurt to have a little variety. The yong tau foo is fresh and have a pretty nice texture to it. They come in chilly, okra (lady’s finger), bitter guord, tofu, foo chok, and gyoya if you just ask them to mix it up. Of course, you can order seperately.

    Here’s the map, foo!

If you love yong tau foo, this is the place to go. Any of the 3 restaurants will do justice to the Ampang Yong Tau Foo name. I never walk out of that place with an unsatisfied stomach. There was once I had to down 18.5 pieces of yong tau foo cos we mistakenly brought a Malay friend there and found out it wasn’t halal after ordering 30 pieces for 3 person. The other chump only had 11.5, wtf.

The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch only.

KY eats – noodle in a box, SS2 night market

Night market (Pasar Malam) at SS2 runs every monday night. There are several type of fancy food sold there that you don’t usually find at local food courts or restaurants. One of them would be the noodle in a box, more appropriately, a plastic container, or in Cantonese, “hap chai min“.

Boxed noodle at SS2 pasar malam
    Looks good, no?

This dish is sold by 2 young chaps, and they usually set up their stall nearby the Magnum 4D shop. It’s usually quite busy and frankly it’s hard to miss the stall since the set up is quite unique.

The noodle is similar to those you have in wan tan mee, but of finer variety. You can choose from the 3 ingredients: BBQ pork, pork in sauce, and chicken leg + mushroom. Noodle with single ingredient is sold for RM3.80, combination of any two for Rm 4.00, and all three for RM 4.50. Obviously I ordered with all, it was a no brainer. hehe

PJ SS2 pasar malam boxed noodle
Slurps.. the little plastic container is going to be empty in a few minutes

Other than the main ingredients described above. The standard stuff are green onion, fried shallot, mushroom, fungus, green chilli, and of course, the noodle. A thick soup/sauce that tastes pretty creamy is poured over to give you that rich taste.

The dish tastes pretty good, almost like a cross of ordinary chicken leg and mushroom wan tan mee and beef noodle (though this is pork.) I especially like the fact that it is served in the plastic container, makes it easier to eat it at the nearby misai mamak stall. They even give you chopsticks.

Try it, I think you’ll be delighted.

    KY’s birthday – Thanks Guys

So it was my birthday on Saturday. I’m not telling you how young I still am, just old enough to drink and young enough to still be single. It was a blast, and here’s how the whole fakeplan thingy the noobs did for me.

11amTerence fetched me for lunch, with Sai Meng. He gave some stupid reasons that he wanted to spend me dinner but was going to be busy at night, so, lunch. I believed that bugger. We went for some yong tau foo at Ampang, it was the good. At this time Kerol was pretending to sleep and skipped the lunch… it was all fake.

    KY birthday

2pm – We reached my place after lunch, I opened my room door and wtf.. whole room filled with post-it notes, everything was labeled! On my bed itself there were more than a dozen notes… mirror, lamp, books, photos, speakers, laptop, every single bottle of liquor.. The noobs (ST, Kim, FA, Erna, Kerol, Chan, Huey Fang) were all there.

3-6pm – We went to Chillies at Bangsar Shopping Complex, had some beer, food, and OMGWTFBBQ Suanie got me a birthday cake, it was cholate with banana inside, was cold, was cool, was good. Suanie & Matakecik joined us at this point.

    KY birthday

Dinner time – Had seafood at Telugong, Klang. A few more joined us, including Sheryl, Zess and his gf. There were about 13 of us if I remember correctly. Margie & Faggot weren’t able too join us, but thanks for the bottle of French Merlot dude!!

It was a great day, not looking forward to the next one tho. After the 21st, you just don’t really look forward to the subsequent birthdays..

THANKS GUYS! I had a great time, and really appreciate it. I also want to express my gratitudes to everyone who called, sms, left friendster msg, YM msg, MSN msg, and IRC wishes. hehe.
